Sunaparanta - Goa Centre for the Arts

Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts is a non-profit arts initiative that hosts gallery shows, events, and community-based programming in Goa, India. N.

Over the years, Sunaparanta has produced shows independently and in collaboration with leading galleries across India and Europe to present artistic talent both national and international. We have showcased work from internationally acclaimed artists like Bharat Sikka, Laxman Pai, Antonio Piedade da Cruz, Nikhil Chopra, Roger Ballen, Julian Opie, Cruzo, and F. Souza among others. Some of our large

r group shows are often produced in collaboration with India's leading galleries such as Vadehra Art Gallery, Project 88, Jhaveri Contemporary, PhotoINK, Nature Morte, Chatterjee and Lal, and The Guild among others. Apart from exhibitions, Sunaparanta also hosts events like book releases, lectures, musical performances and theatre presentations. We were home to the Shanghvi salons founded and hosted by bestselling novelist Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi featuring conversations with creative personalities like Sudarshan Shetty, William Dalrymple & Olivia Fraser, Dayanita Singh, Jaya Bachchan, Anne Enright, Sooni Taraporevala, Jitish Kallat, Leila & Aradhana Seth, Bharti Kher and more.

These archival materials offer insight into Mário Miranda’s process of making, bringing together letters, notes, scribbles, drawings, magazine covers, published illustrations, and commercial commissions. Spanning the later half of the twentieth century, they trace the rhythms of his working practice while reflecting the visual culture and popular media of the period. The archive also includes calendars, brochures, and other ephemera, some of whose original drawings are presented elsewhere in this exhibition.

‘Love Scenes in Films from Around the World’ is a compilation of illustrations made for Filmfare. Each work stages a different country or territory through the language of romance, cinema, and caricature. Moving between domestic scenes, literary references, political tensions, and tourist clichés, the drawings reflect how nations are often reduced to familiar images and stories. The series draws equally from popular culture and world events, where love becomes a device for thinking about identity, conflict, fantasy, and misunderstanding across borders.

Film Frolics brings together Mário Miranda’s satirical illustrations for Filmfare from the 1960s to the 1970s, offering a humorous glimpse into the social life of the Hindi film industry. Rather than dwell on glamour alone, these works turn to the worlds around cinema producers, aspirants, gossip columnists, hangers-on, and self-important insiders rendered as exaggerated yet familiar types. At the centre of many scenes is the recurring figure of Miss Nimbupani, whose sharp presence lends the series much of its wit. With affectionate irreverence, the drawings puncture celebrity culture while capturing the vanity, ambition, and spectacle that surround the film world.Last few days to visit the exhibition!

In gallery 2, works are seen through Mário Miranda’s eyes: village processions, political satire, funeral gatherings, choir rehearsals, and everyday moments of humour and community. Alongside these are observational drawings from France and Portugal, and illustrations from landmark publications such as ‘Open Eyes: A Journey Through Karnataka’ and ‘Inside Goa’. Together, these works reveal Miranda’s enduring attention to place, people, and the rhythms of daily life.

In galley 1 the works trace Mário Miranda’s long engagement with Mumbai during his years in popular publishing, when he produced cartoons, covers, and illustrations for The Times of India Group, including The Illustrated Weekly of India and Dharmayug. Mário’s Bombay was a city caught between lack and excess. Through railway platforms, streets, homes, offices, and parties, he pictured a place full of movement, humour, aspiration, and strain. No single figure dominates these scenes; commuters, clerks, families, socialites, and bureaucrats all belong to the same restless city. Beneath the satire lies a deeply human view of everyday life.

Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts invites you to the closing celebration of the Mário de Miranda birth centenary exhibition, Growing Up in Mario’s World, on Sunday, 28 June 2026, 5pm onwards.

The evening will feature a walkthrough by Shaun Nicholas Lobo, whose collection of over 100 Mário de Miranda works form the heart of the exhibition. Celebrating the vibrant Goan spirit so often captured in Miranda’s drawings, the Azavedo Brass Band, led by Francisco Xavier Azavedo ‘Putush’, will present music that has long been part of Goa’s feasts and celebrations, with Bambino Dias introducing each musical set.

Join us for an evening of culture, music and memories as we celebrate Mário de Miranda’s enduring legacy and bid farewell to this special exhibition.

Open to all with limited seating.
