Taking science to the people is its mission. The main objective of the Society is to promote and popularize science & technology, with focus on emerging areas, career opportunities and issues of current relevance. We focus on general public and in particular students. For funding, the SPSTI depends on individuals, socially conscious companies and State governments and Government of India. They SPSTI has taken up a number of projects to fulfill its objective. At present, its areas of operation are States of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. More States would be added in due course of time.

on the Life and Legacy of Held at Panjab University Keya Dharamvir Dharam Vir Circus of Science
The Extended Region Chapter of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI-CER), in collaboration with the Society for Promotion of Science and Technology in India (SPSTI) and Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized a public lecture on the theme “Life and Times of Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar: A Comprehension” today at the Seminar Hall, Department of Chemistry, Panjab University.
The lecture was delivered by Professor Arun K. Grover, Former Vice Chancellor of Panjab University and Senior Professor (Retd.), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. In his address, Prof. Grover highlighted the remarkable life journey of Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, widely regarded as the architect of modern scientific research infrastructure in India.
The lecture traced Dr. Bhatnagar’s early life, education, and pioneering scientific contributions, while emphasizing his pivotal role in institution building and in shaping India’s scientific and technological development. Prof. Grover elaborated on Dr. Bhatnagar’s vision for strengthening research in the country and his instrumental role in establishing national laboratories under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
The lecture also reflected on Dr. Bhatnagar’s contributions as a distinguished scientist, inspiring teacher, and visionary planner whose efforts significantly advanced the growth of science and technology in India.
The event was attended by faculty members, researchers, students, and members of the scientific community, who appreciated the insightful reflections on the enduring legacy of Dr. Bhatnagar and his impact on India’s scientific ecosystem.

Celebration of National Mathematics Day at Panjab University

Chandigarh, January 15, 2026:
The Society for Promotion of Science & Technology in India (SPSTI), in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences India (NASI), Extended Chandigarh Chapter, and in association with the Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized the Celebration of National Mathematics Day on Thursday, January 15, 2026. The event was supported by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Chandigarh Administration.

The programme commenced at 3:00 PM at the B. M. Anand Auditorium, Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prior to the formal proceedings, arrangements and technical settings were coordinated by the SPSTI staff along with Prof. Neeru Chaudhari, Department of Physics, Panjab University.

Prof. S. K. Tripathi, Chairperson, Department of Physics, Panjab University, welcomed the audience and dignitaries. This was followed by an introductory address by Prof. A. K. Grover, former Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, and Vice President, SPSTI, who highlighted the significance of National Mathematics Day and the rich legacy of mathematical research at Panjab University.

The Chief Guest, Prof. Sudesh Kaur Khanduja, FNA, FASc, FNAs, FTWAS, Emeritus Professor, Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, was formally introduced by Ms. Rajni Bhalla from SPSTI. In her address, Prof. Khanduja emphasized the contributions of the Punjab School of Mathematics to national and international mathematical research and inspired young scholars to pursue excellence in the field.

Prof. K. K. Bhasin (NASI) introduced the speaker of the day, Prof. Surinder Pal Singh Kainth, Chairperson, Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof. Kainth then delivered an insightful lecture titled “100 Years of Punjab School of Mathematics”, tracing a century-long journey of academic achievements, eminent mathematicians, and landmark contributions made by the institution.

The lecture was followed by an interactive session, during which participants engaged in meaningful discussions with the speaker. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Keya Dharamvir from SPSTI, acknowledging the efforts of the organizers, speakers, and attendees. The event ended with tea.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, researchers, students, and science enthusiasts, making the celebration a memorable and intellectually enriching occasion.

Today, Sh. Dharam Vir, IAS (Retd.) & President, SPSTI, Prof. Keya Dharamvir, General Secretary, SPSTI, and Sh. M P Sharma, Manager, SPSTI extended their warm wishes to Dr. Sunil Kumar on his new assignment.

Dr. Sunil has been associated with SPSTI since 2016 and played a pivotal role in facilitating the flagship program Circus of Science in Karnal and Kurukshetra.
