28th May 2026, Pakyong: A Tea Growers’ Meet was successfully held today at Pakyong under the 21-Gnathang Machong Constituency, organised by the Tea Growers’ Welfare Board (TGWB) of Gnathang Machong Constituency.
The programme was graciously attended by Honourable Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Shri D.T. Lepcha, along with Honourable Area MLA, Smt. Pamin Lepcha.
The meeting focused on discussing key issues, challenges, and developmental opportunities related to tea cultivation in the region, with special emphasis on the welfare and empowerment of local tea growers. Deliberations were also held on promoting tea tourism and exploring sustainable avenues to boost the local economy through tea-based tourism initiatives.
Earlier, Honourable MP (Rajya Sabha) Shri D.T. Lepcha, accompanied by officials from the Tea Board of India and Tea Growers’ Welfare Board (TGWB), visited Machong and inspected the tea plantation site in the region. During the visit, discussions were held regarding the potential of tea cultivation, existing challenges, and opportunities for market expansion. The officials also shared valuable suggestions on improving tea quality, adopting better cultivation and processing practices, and strengthening market linkages to create better opportunities for local tea growers.
Addressing the gathering, Honourable MP (Rajya Sabha) Shri D.T. Lepcha expressed gratitude to the Tea Board of India officials for extending support and guidance to local tea growers. He highlighted tea plantation as a dream initiative aimed at generating sustainable livelihood opportunities and promoting tea tourism and township development in the region. He also urged growers to obtain QR-based identity cards to avail government benefits and assistance.
Honourable MLA Smt. Pamin Lepcha stated that tea cultivation has immense potential to emerge as a sustainable tea-growing belt with proper technical and institutional support. She emphasised that the initiative would strengthen rural empowerment, livelihood generation, and economic development. She further requested the Tea Board of India to conduct regular awareness and training programmes for growers and informed that around three acres of land have already been identified for the establishment of a local tea factory.
Additionally, Director of Tea Development, Tea Board of India, Kolkata Head Office, Shri S. Soundararajan appreciated the initiatives being undertaken for the development of the region and stated that such efforts would contribute significantly towards socio-economic growth and rural empowerment.
He emphasised the importance of producing quality tea over quantity and assured continued support through seasonal workshops and training programmes aimed at enhancing scientific tea cultivation practices and management techniques among tea growers.

Phuri Sherpa; Factory Advisory Officer, Tea Board of India, Siliguri, Shri Subir Paul, OSD to Hon’ble MLA Shri MB Gurung, DFO(T) Shri Sonam Pintso Bhutia; SDM Pakyong, Shri N.K. Bhandari; Panchayat members, officials from various line departments, and executive members of tea Grower's Welfare Board of Gnathang Machong Constituency.
