Meghalaya, the Abode of Clouds, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, living root bridges, waterfalls, and vibrant culture. However, it is also home to the heaviest rainfall in the world, especially during the monsoon season . While this creates lush greenery and stunning natural beauty, it also brings significant risks that visitors must be aware of.
We urge all tourists to take the following precautions seriously:
Do Not Trek Alone: Remote locations and trails can become extremely dangerous during the rains. Landslides, slippery paths, and flash floods are real threats. Always hire a local guide who knows the terrain well.
Avoid Streams and Waterfalls: These may look calm but can turn deadly in moments due to sudden water surges upstream. Stay a safe distance from flowing water and never attempt to swim or cross streams during heavy rain.
Check Weather Updates: Rainfall can be intense and unpredictable. Always check local weather reports and consult local authorities or tourism offices before heading out.
Respect Local Advice: The local community understands the risks better than anyone. If locals or authorities advise against traveling to certain areas, please respect their guidance.
We respectfully urge the Meghalaya Government to take stronger steps to ensure tourist safety during monsoon months. This includes:
Mandatory awareness campaigns at airports, bus stations, and hotels.
Visible safety signs in popular trekking and waterfall areas.
Availability of certified local guides and better access to emergency services in remote areas.
Tourism thrives when it is safe. Let us protect both the visitors and the natural beauty of Meghalaya by promoting responsible and informed travel.
