We work as ENABLERS, by bringing together the people who want to give and the organisations that work on the ground to make a difference.

In this excerpt, Mangesh Wange, CEO and Board Member of Swades Foundation, shares a powerful lesson on sustainability and community ownership.

Sustainable change cannot be driven indefinitely from the outside. It has to be owned from within.

The decision to step back from communities that were not yet ready to take ownership wasn't a failure. It was a recognition that resilience cannot be imposed—it must emerge.

Because sometimes, the most important question isn't how long we stay. It's whether communities are ready to lead when we leave.

What happens after a successful programme ends?

For SNEHA, the answer came from an unexpected lesson in Dharavi. After achieving significant reductions in child malnutrition, the team exited several communities, only to discover years later that malnutrition levels had risen again.

The experience reshaped how SNEHA approached sustainability.

Today, every intervention is designed around a managed transition—strengthening community leadership, building trust, working closely with public systems, and ensuring that progress can continue long after the organisation steps back.

Because sustainable change isn't about leaving. It's about creating the conditions for communities and systems to carry the work forward on their own.

🎥 Hear how this experience transformed SNEHA's approach to resilience and sustainability in this insightful conversation with Vanessa D'Souza, CEO, SNEHA.

What happens after a successful programme ends?

At SNEHA, a child malnutrition intervention in Dharavi helped reduce malnutrition across several communities. But when the team returned three years later, they discovered something unexpected and the experience became a turning point.

Speaking at the Synergy & Sustainability Symposium, Vanessa D’Souza, CEO of SNEHA, reflected on how this experience reshaped the organisation’s approach to sustainability. It reinforced a simple but powerful lesson: lasting change requires more than successful implementation. It calls for thoughtful transitions, community ownership, and systems that can carry progress forward long after an organisation steps back.

Because true impact is not measured by what changes while we are present, but by what endures after we leave.

What if the most important outcomes of development can't be measured?

We count beneficiaries, outputs, and indicators. But how do we measure confidence, dignity, or the courage to lead?

In this compelling excerpt, Dr. Sujata Khandekar challenges the sector's obsession with numbers and makes a powerful case for balancing quantitative metrics with qualitative change. She also leaves us with a thought-provoking reflection on collaboration:

"We know what to do together, but we do not understand what to let go."

If you're working in the CSR, NGO, or philanthropy space, this is a conversation worth watching.

We often ask whether our programmes are inclusive, sustainable, and people-centric.

But how often do we ask the same questions of our own organisations?

In this thought-provoking excerpt, Dr. Sujata Khandekar challenges the sector to look inward while questioning who holds power, who makes decisions, and whether the values we champion in communities are truly reflected within our institutions.

Because the systems we build outside are often a reflection of the systems we build within.

What if resilience isn't something we build for communities, but something we unlock within them?

Too often, we see marginalized communities as passive recipients of change. But what if they are the leaders we've been overlooking?

In this powerful keynote, Dr. Sujata Khandekar challenges conventional development thinking and argues that lasting change begins with leadership from within.

If you're interested in building systems that endure, this is a conversation worth watching.
