ISWAN - South Asia

ISWAN - South Asia Seafarers bring us 95% of the things we use every day and take care of us when we travel by sea, but their lives are often tough.

ISWAN South Asia is the regional office of ISWAN, an international organisation that promotes and directly serves the welfare of seafarers worldwide through our 24*7 SeafarerHelp helpline. The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) is a membership organisation that works to promote and support the welfare of seafarers all over the world. They experience long periods away f

rom family and friends with limited or no communication, fast turnaround of ships in ports with severely restricted shore leave, reduced crew numbers and increased workloads. Welfare services and facilities both on board and ashore can be a lifeline for seafarers. Our free, 24-hour, multilingual helpline, SeafarerHelp, is one of the direct welfare services we provide to seafarers. We have also launched a 24-hour helpline specifically for professional yacht crew - Yacht Crew Help. Other services we provide include our relief funds for seafarers and their family members in need and a range of health information resources. We work with companies, unions, governments, welfare organisations and ports for the implementation of the ILO Maritime Labour Convention, 2006. We support those who establish and provide welfare facilities and services in port and on ships. We are funded by membership subscriptions, grants from foundations, sponsorship and earned income. We are grateful to our main funders – the ITF Seafarers’ Trust, The TK Foundation, Seafarers UK and Trafigura Foundation – for their continued support.

As part of its Family Outreach Programme (FOP), ISWAN recently participated in the Hafnia Family Workshop, held on 20th December 2025, at The Society of The Home For The Aged, Mumbai.

The workshop brought together seafarers, family members, and elderly residents, creating a space for meaningful interaction and shared experiences. Through direct engagement with seafarers and their families, the session focused on two key themes: effective communication and mental health and wellbeing.

These conversations highlighted the importance of staying connected, supporting one another emotionally, and strengthening understanding between seafarers and their families, especially during challenging times. The activity reflected the spirit of ISWAN’s Family Outreach Programme, which aims to build stronger, more supportive connections between life at sea and life at home.

We thank Hafnia member of the BW Group, for their support and memorable experience for all involved. The session not only created space for seafarers and their families to connect but also contributed to a truly noble cause, bringing engagement, care, and shared moments to the residents of the home for the aged.

We are pleased to announce The Maritime Union of India (MUI) as a Supporting Organisation for the ISWAN India Seminar 2025.

The Maritime Union of India (MUI) represents Merchant Navy Officers and works to protect their rights, welfare, and professional interests across the maritime sector. Affiliated with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), MUI is part of a global and national network advocating for fair and internationally accepted work and wage conditions.

Through periodic agreements with Indian and international shipowners, ship managers, and seafarer unions, MUI supports compliance with national and international regulations, including the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006. These agreements also enable the Union to sustain welfare funds for its members and their families.

MUI provides experienced, structured support to its members, including guidance on legal, taxation, and medical matters through qualified professionals. The Union also offers protection of Certificates of Competency (CoC), supporting members with legal costs in cases such as Marine Courts of Inquiry or suspension proceedings.

With branch and liaison offices across India and representation on government and semi-government maritime boards and committees, MUI continues to work in partnership with the shipping fraternity to strengthen employment prospects, welfare, and solidarity for Merchant Navy Officers.

We are honoured to have MUI as a sponsor and deeply value their efforts to uplift the lives of those navigating the seas.
Stay tuned for more updates as we gear up for the event!
