Our Story
This is the story of how Chandni and Dev became the Voice of Slum. Both Chandni and Dev has experienced life in the slum, they have tasted the pain and the reality of the slum. The hardships that came along and the struggles of trying to survive daily. Chandni from a very young age started doing street magic with her father to help him earn money for the family then started selling flowers in the street when her father passed away. She had to take the responsibility of earning for the family from a very young age. Dev lived in railway stations and he was addicted to drugs, he had no place that he could call home but all these adversities and hardships did not bring them down but instead they made something out of it. They did not want other slum children to go through the struggles that they went through, they wanted to open opportunities for them so that they can be educated, and achieve their dreams, that is why Voice of Slum was founded by Dev and Chandni.
The main aim of the organization is to help create a pathway for the children to break the barriers and empower and educate them so that they can be a part of the mainstream society. We want the slum children to be educated, we want them to achieve their dreams and reach their full potential because they deserve it. we want them to feel that they belong to the society like any other person.
Now, Voice of Slum runs a school which provide education to the slum children, we spread awareness on the importance of education among the children and the parents. We provide them bridge course called Kalam Bridge Course for a period of time and prepare them for the mainstream schools. In the bridge course we help them to build their self-esteem, give them skill development classes, personality training classes, leadership training and self-defense classes.
The organisation also runs an after school program for the students who go to mainstream schools who have been a part of the bridge course at voice of slum, we give them tuition’s for all the subjects, we also provide them their school supplies and financially support them. Voice of Slum pay 75% of the school fees of these children. The after school program not only gives them lessons but also help them in their confidence building, encourage them to participate in events and be a part of the school activities, the program also focuses on helping the kids cop up with the environment because sometimes it becomes difficult for some children to adjust to the new environment when they join new school, and help them in preparing to compete with students who have been a par of the mainstream school.
