We are pleased to share that Sanjay Kumar, founder, Deshkal Society delivered a talk on 18 September 2026 at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), USA, titled 'Dynamics of Inclusive Classrooms, Social Diversity, and Marginalized Children in India.'
The talk reflected on nearly two and a half decades of engagement with questions of school education, social diversity, pluralism, and marginality through three significant publications—School Education, Pluralism and Marginality: Comparative Perspectives, Dynamics of Inclusive Classrooms, and Social Context of Learning in India—which together traced the journey of Deshkal Society, a civil society organization in India.
It was a particularly special moment to engage with the faculty and students during the Q&A session. The discussion was lively and insightful and provided us with an opportunity to better understand teacher education programmes and schooling in California from multicultural and diverse social perspectives.
We are deeply honoured by the gracious presence of Dr. Karen S. Myers-Bowman, Dean of the College of Education, and Dr. Jacqueline Grallo, Dean of the University Library, who shared their reflections on the presentation and the ensuing discussion.
At the beginning of the session, Prof. Christine Sleeter introduced the theme and briefly situated the journey of Deshkal Society. At the conclusion, she summarized the key points emerging from the talk and the discussion.
