In 2025, India witnessed over 20 major disasters - from the Dharali flash floods to the floods in Punjab and Maharashtra, placing unprecedented pressure on humanitarian response systems across the country.

In such times, the Sphere Standards serve as a vital compass for ensuring quality, accountability, and dignity in humanitarian action. Grounded in the Humanitarian Charter, Protection Principles, and the Core Humanitarian Standard, they remain the global benchmark for principled and effective response.

Recognizing this critical and growing need for strengthened humanitarian response, Sphere India is hosting a refresher and orientation session to help experienced responders revisit these standards and introduce them to new humanitarian professionals.

Led by Sphere Trainer Mr. Subhashis Roy, the session will explore key foundations, technical chapters, and their practical applications in the field.

As disasters grow in scale and complexity, their cascading economic and social impacts continue to strain communities and development systems, often wiping out years of progress in a single event. Financial systems, too, bear the brunt, through disrupted markets, loss of livelihoods, and the high cost of recovery.

Recognizing the need, gap, and it's alignment with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) 2025's theme - “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,” Sphere India Academy is organizing a National Consultation titled
“Resilient Futures: Financing Disaster Risk Reduction in India.”

The consultation aims to advance national dialogue on strengthening disaster risk reduction (DRR) financing mechanisms - from domestic allocations and multilateral support to private sector and community-driven models. It will bring together policymakers, financial experts, humanitarian organizations, private sector leaders, and civil society to explore strategies for scaling domestic DRR financing, fostering inter-agency coordination, leveraging CSR and ESG investments, and strengthening local and community-based financing for inclusive resilience.
