On World Snake Day, HCLFoundation marked an important step towards strengthening human wildlife coexistence and reducing snakebite risks with the launch of the Snake Emergency Response Programme and Response Tool (SERPENT) and a two-day Snake Rescuer Training Workshop in Kokrajhar, Assam.

Implemented under the Animal Welfare thematic of Harit in partnership with Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT) and Help Earth, and in collaboration with the Forest Department, Bodoland Territorial Council, the initiative brought together 30 snake rescuers and frontline forest staff to build their capacity in ethical snake rescue, safe handling practices, emergency response and community engagement.

Developed with the support of HCLFoundation, SERPENT is a technology-enabled platform designed to strengthen snakebite emergency response. Piloted in Bodoland, the application will enable citizens to report snake and snakebite emergencies, support timely coordination between rescuers and healthcare providers, and generate real-time data to inform conservation and public health efforts.

The workshop also included the distribution of snake rescue kits, hands-on training in challenging rescue scenarios and the unveiling of educational resources on the snakes of Bodoland, reinforcing the importance of scientific awareness and responsible rescue practices.

Through its partnership with MCBT under the SAFE (Snake Awareness for Everyone) project, HCLFoundation continues to support the National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming, working towards safer communities while promoting the conservation of one of nature's most misunderstood species.

Water security begins with communities.

Across the water-stressed landscapes of Karauli, Rajasthan, traditional water conservation systems are being revived through the collective efforts of communities, supported by HCLFoundation and Tarun Bharat Sangh.

By restoring Johads, Baoris, Talabs, Pokhars, Stepwells and Anicuts, this initiative is strengthening groundwater recharge, improving year-round water availability, enhancing biodiversity, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. Most importantly, it is empowering communities to lead the change through participatory planning, Jal Samwads, Nadi Ghati Yatras, Kisan Jagriti Shivirs and Shramdan.

Now, it’s time to scale more such solutions.

WATCH | Urban Forests play a crucial role in offsetting urban heat island effect, creating a safe haven for the biodiversity in a concrete jungle. Sardar Patel Park, Kundrathur in Chennai is one such patch of land transformed into a mini urban forest ecosystem, due to the joint efforts of HCLFoundation, Kundrathur Municipal Corporation and implementing partner Thuvakkam. 
 
"Acting locally for global impact", Harit has restored 27 such mini forest habitats across six states in India. These sites serve as a model for habitat restoration and as a home for birds, insects and biodiversity of all kinds.
