The Rights-Based Programme in the villages, organized by NWTWS and executed with the help of MSW interns from Stella Maris College and Madras Christian College in Chennai, successfully raised awareness on critical issues such as women’s and children’s rights.

By employing traditional folk art forms like songs, street plays, and puppet shows, the interns conveyed these significant messages in a culturally resonant manner. This approach not only captured the audience’s attention but also ensured that the information was accessible to all community members.

Following each performance, interactive discussions provided a platform for the audience to engage deeply with the topics, ask questions, and share their thoughts. A significant portion of the program focused on educating children about personal safety, specifically the concept of good touch and bad touch, which was presented in a child-friendly manner to aid understanding.

The initiative was met with enthusiasm and active participation, demonstrating the effectiveness of using culturally relevant methods to foster awareness and dialogue in rural communities.

The Blue Mountains still whisper. Of resilience. Of dignity. Of a people who never stopped believing.

Deep within the mist-covered Nilgiris (The Blue Mountains) of India live the Kattunaickas, Paniyas, Betta Kurumbas, and Mullu Kurumbas—tribes whose stories have been sidelined for centuries. THE FORGOTTEN PEOPLE is a powerful documentary that explores their fight for dignity, the legacy of a man who changed their lives, and a rising generation of Adivasi leaders reclaiming their future.

In this Film:
A Legacy of Service: The story of John Wilson, the English nurse who traded everything to build a clinic with his own hands in 1978.

Beyond Medicine: How the Nilgiris-Wayanad Tribal Welfare Society (NWTWS) provides more than just healthcare, they provide a voice, identity, and the path to education.

Resilience in the Rain: Behind-the-scenes of the incredible mobile clinics that trek deep into forests to ensure no one is left behind.

The Future is Adivasi: Meet the students who are breaking the cycle of discrimination to become the doctors, teachers, and leaders of tomorrow.

Why This Story Matters:
For generations, these communities faced geographical and social exclusion. This film is a witness to their survival and a tribute to the movement that continues to grow under the leadership of Mr. Ravi and the support of the Azim Premji Foundation.

The initiation of Summer Classes in tribal villages during the holiday season has proven to be a transformative approach towards education in rural areas. By leveraging the relaxed atmosphere of the holidays, NWTWS has successfully redefined learning as an enjoyable and productive experience for children.

With the active participation of hostel children, who were trained to facilitate these sessions in their own villages, the program fostered an environment of fun-based learning.

The involvement of MSW student interns from Stella Maris College played a crucial role, as they equipped the hostel children with skills to lead engaging educational activities like games, storytelling, and group discussions. This not only enhanced the cognitive and communicative abilities of the village children but also instilled a sense of leadership and community responsibility in the hostel students. The success of the Hut Classes in 10 villages stands as a testament to the power of interactive and participatory learning methods in creating a joyful learning environment that benefits both learners and leaders alike.

The initiative by the NWTWS Community Development Team to distribute Post Office savings passbooks is a commendable effort towards promoting financial inclusion.

By providing these passbooks, the team is empowering individuals within the community to access secure and reliable savings facilities. This not only helps in safeguarding their money but also encourages a culture of saving and financial literacy.

Moreover, having a savings passbook can open doors to various financial services and opportunities that might have been inaccessible otherwise. By strengthening financial inclusion, the initiative supports economic growth and stability within the community, ultimately contributing to its overall development and prosperity.

The NWTWS Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) team, in conjunction with other MMU teams, is spearheading a Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) programme aimed at screening for Sickle Cell Anaemia and Thalassemia in rural villages.

This initiative seeks to bring essential healthcare services directly to underserved communities, ensuring that individuals receive timely and accurate diagnoses without the need for travel to distant medical facilities. Our dedicated staff members are playing a crucial role in this effort, leveraging their expertise to facilitate screenings and provide vital health education. By identifying these genetic blood disorders early, the programme aims to improve patient outcomes and raise awareness about the importance of regular health check-ups.

This collaborative approach underscores our commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and fostering healthier communities.

The NWTWS Community Development Team recently had the enriching opportunity to visit Vidyodaya School in Gudalur, a unique institution dedicated exclusively to the education of tribal children.

During our visit, we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Ramdas, the Trustee, who shared with us the distinctive features of the school and its commitment to preserving tribal culture and identity. We also interacted with Mr. Vishnu, an administrative staff member, who provided detailed insights into the learning activities and initiatives undertaken by both students and teachers.

The school operates under the guidance of the Adivasi Munnatra Sangam (AMS) and emphasizes a holistic educational approach, blending academics with sports and games, which are integral to the students’ learning journey. The teachers, primarily from tribal communities themselves, serve as facilitators, fostering a supportive environment that respects and promotes traditional practices. This visit was an invaluable learning experience for us, highlighting the importance of culturally adaptive education systems.

At the NWTWS hostel, students found a perfect balance between academics and relaxation by participating in team games after study hours. These activities not only provided a much-needed break from their rigorous academic schedules but also served as a platform for fostering camaraderie and strengthening friendships.

Engaging in games such as football, or even informal team challenges, students developed essential skills like communication, collaboration, and leadership. The shared experiences in these activities created bonds that transcended the competitive nature of the games, promoting a sense of community and belonging among the hostel residents.

This holistic approach to student life not only refreshed their minds but also prepared them to work effectively in diverse teams, a skill crucial for their future endeavors.

The NWTWS’s recent Basic Life Support (BLS) training programme proved to be an invaluable initiative for staff development.

Under the expert guidance of trainers Mr. Akhil Viswanath and Mrs. Lijumol, staff members were meticulously instructed in essential first aid techniques for emergency scenarios such as cardiac arrest, choking, and respiratory arrest.

Through detailed demonstrations, the significance of performing effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was emphasized, ensuring participants understood the critical steps of when and how to intervene during emergencies. The training was interactive, with staff showing keen engagement and practicing the procedures hands-on. This initiative not only enhanced the participants’ confidence in handling medical emergencies but also fostered a sense of preparedness across the organization.

The distribution of certificates at the conclusion of the programme symbolized the successful completion of this vital training, leaving attendees with a reinforced understanding of life-saving techniques.

The NWTWS Community Development Team recently made a significant impact by distributing Post Office savings passbooks to beneficiaries in local villages. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote financial inclusion and empower community members by providing them with access to secure savings options.

By handing over these passbooks, the team is not only facilitating a means for individuals to save money but also encouraging financial literacy and independence. This step is particularly crucial for individuals who may not have had access to traditional banking services, thus opening new avenues for personal and economic growth within the community.

The distribution of these passbooks marks an essential stride towards fostering a financially resilient and empowered society.
