During Menstrual Hygiene Management Week, our state teams highlighted innovative, community-led approaches that support menstrual health awareness and preparedness among adolescent girls.

The Kishori Kangan is helping girls track their menstrual cycles in a simple and effective way. By using colored beads to mark different stages of the cycle, girls can better prepare for their periods and manage menstrual hygiene with confidence.

The initiative has also encouraged more open conversations around menstruation in schools, creating greater awareness and support among students.

Watch this video to see how girls in Chhattisgarh are using the Kishori Kangan and transforming the way they understand and manage menstrual health.

What do women really need in washrooms during their periods? 🩸

This Menstrual Hygiene Day, we asked our women Jal Champions, and their answers point to one urgent need: .

Clean water, proper disposal bins, functioning locks, and privacy are not luxuries, they are basic entitlements. Managing periods should be safe, comfortable, and dignified for all women, everywhere.

Together, we can build a world where menstruation is managed with dignity and safety. 💙

Where is Maya?

She is among the majority of young women in India facing invisible barriers at work and beyond. Only 27.7% of young women in India have access to all four essentials for menstrual hygiene: period products, decent toilets, water, and soap.

For millions of women and girls, periods continue to mean missed opportunities, interrupted careers, discomfort, stigma, and exclusion. A lack of access to these fundamental essentials continues to hold many back from fully participating in professional and daily life.

Menstrual health is not just about hygiene—it is about dignity, equality, and the right to show up without fear or barriers.

Where is Maya?

Still missing from classrooms, workplaces, and everyday conversations because menstrual hygiene is still not accessible to all.

For millions of women and girls, periods continue to mean missed opportunities, interrupted education, discomfort, stigma, and exclusion. The reality is that a lack of access to decent toilets, water, soap, and menstrual products continues to hold many back from fully participating in daily life.

Menstrual health is not just about hygiene. It is about dignity, equality, health, and the right to show up without fear or barriers.

Periods are natural, and access to safe menstrual hygiene is your right, not a privilege.

From clean toilets and safe disposal facilities to affordable sanitary pads, these policies exist to support girls and women across India. It’s time to know your rights, talk about them, and demand better access for all.

Menstrual hygiene is a fundamental right, not a privilege. The Indian Government has clear policies in place to ensure girls and women have access to safe, affordable, and dignified period care. “Don’t touch pickles.”
“Periods are dirty.”
“Girls should miss school during menstruation.”

We’ve all heard these myths. And it’s time we leave them behind. 🚫🩸
This Menstrual Hygiene Day, the WaterAid India Delhi office is busting common period myths with facts, conversations, and a little fun — because menstruation is normal, and so should talking about it.

We put our team to the test! Could you spot the facts from the fiction? 👇
❌ Myth: PMS is “all in the mind”.
✅ Fact: PMS symptoms are real and caused by hormonal changes. Fatigue, cramps, headaches, and mood changes are common.
❌ Myth: Girls should not touch pickles or food during periods.
✅ Fact: There is no scientific evidence that menstruating people spoil food or pickles.
❌ Myth: Menstruating girls should not enter the kitchen or cook.
✅ Fact: Girls and women can cook during periods. Good hygiene while handling food is what matters.
❌ Myth: Girls should avoid curd, yogurt, pickles, fruits, vegetables, or cold water during periods.
✅ Fact: Nutritious food and hydration are important during menstruation, especially iron-rich foods.
❌ Myth: Menstruating girls should not bathe or wash their hair.

Menstrual health is not just about products. It is also about safe toilets, clean water, privacy, disposal systems, dignity, and access for all. 🚰🚪♿💡

Let’s replace stigma with awareness.
Myths with facts.
Silence with conversations.

“Better sanitation facilities have made managing periods safer, easier, and more dignified for women and girls.” — Deepa, Damoh, Madhya Pradesh

Access to better sanitation facilities, safe toilets, water, and awareness around menstrual health has changed how women and girls experience dignity, safety, and confidence every day.

For Deepa, the change is not just about infrastructure, it is about being able to live with comfort, safety, and without fear or shame. Moving away from open defecation and creating spaces for open conversations on menstruation has helped women feel more secure and empowered in their daily lives.

This Menstrual Hygiene Day, we recognise that menstrual dignity begins with safe WASH infrastructure, access, and community support.

22/05/2026

This year, on Menstrual Hygiene Day, we are focusing on the infrastructure that shapes menstrual dignity every day.

From pad vending machines and disposal bins to clean water, lighting, and accessible spaces , these basic infrastructure makes a huge difference in how women and girls experience menstruation every day.

Because menstrual health is not just about products.

It is also about access, safety, dignity, and inclusive spaces.
