Loving a parent with dementia is beautiful, exhausting, and selfless all at once.

This daughter watched her mother's condition change, and instead of giving up, she found a way to love her better.

Walking into Hope Ek Asha wasn't easy. But it was one of the best decisions her family ever made.

24-hour care. Specialist doctors. Physiotherapists. And a place that her mother now calls home.

This Mother's Day, we celebrate every family that had the courage to choose the right care even when it wasn't the easy choice.

Because that too is unconditional love.

According to Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), 40–75% of family caregivers of persons living with dementia experience clinical depression.
Not burnout. Not tiredness. Clinical depression.

This is not weakness. This is what unrecognised caregiving does to a person — the invisible weight of watching someone you love change, while the world expects you to be fine.

The guilt of needing a break.
The grief of mourning someone who is still here.
The exhaustion of caregiving — while also being a spouse, a parent, a professional.

You are not alone. And you were never meant to do this alone.
Reach out — support is here.

Globally, organisations and mental health advocates observe May as Mental Health Awareness Month — a dedicated time to surface conversations that are often left unspoken.
Here's one we think deserves more space:

People living with dementia may forget names and faces.
But they never lose the ability to feel.

They feel warmth. They feel fear. They feel seen — or unseen.
That's why our caregiving team is trained not just to support memory, but to protect something deeper — dignity, comfort, and the quiet reassurance of being loved.

Every. Single. Day.

Because remembering someone's favourite song, holding their hand through a difficult moment, or simply sitting with them in silence — that's not just care. That's connection.

This May, that's the conversation we're choosing to have.

Did You Know?

Only 1 in 10 people with dementia in India ever receives a proper diagnosis. Not because it can’t be detected, but because we’ve normalised calling it “just old age.” Dementia is a medical condition, not an inevitable part of ageing. Stigma and silence are costing lives. If you notice memory changes in a loved one, don’t wait. Consult a Doctor. Early detection matters. It’s time to talk about it.

More than a game day, this is therapy in its most joyful form.

At Hope Ek A.S.H.A., our Day Care Programme is designed around one understanding: for persons living with dementia and Alzheimer’s, structured, purposeful activity is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Ball games, in particular, do more than they appear to. A bowling game exercises fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. A ball passed across a dupatta between two people rebuilds social connection and teamwork a conversation without words. A ball carried on a spoon demands focus, concentration, and quiet determination. Each small success in these activities restores something that dementia often erodes: a sense of capability, independence, and joy.

Beyond the cognitive and physical benefits, these moments matter emotionally. A shared laugh across a table, the anticipation of catching a ball, the pride of getting it right, these are experiences that remind our elders, and their families, that life continues to hold meaning.

Our Day Care Programme offers families a structured, professionally supervised environment where their loved one is engaged, stimulated, and genuinely cared for, every single day.

A family’s journey through dementia is deeply personal, shaped by love, fatigue, hope, and constant adjustment. Stories like these remind us how essential it is to have support that understands both the person and the caregiver.
At ASHA, through structured, compassionate programmes, we aim to provide a level of consistent, attentive care that families often struggle to sustain at home—walking alongside them, and easing the journey in ways that truly matter

On Earth Day, we’re reminded that the world we care for reflects the care we put into it, much like the persons living with dementia we care for every day.

Food Week at Hope Ek A.S.H.A. | Reminiscence Therapy — Part 2: The Vegetable Market Experience
As a continuation of our Food Week celebrations, our residents participated in a recreated vegetable market experience — a setting deeply familiar from their everyday lives.

Building on the activities from Part 1, this session invited residents to engage in the sights, sounds, and interactions of a traditional market. For many, it was a reconnection with a routine they once carried out with independence and confidence.

Reminiscence Therapy draws on the power of familiar experiences to support memory, emotional well-being, and a sense of self — particularly for those living with dementia.

At Hope Ek A.S.H.A., we believe that care goes beyond routine—it lies in reconnecting individuals with their sense of self.

Through Reminiscence Therapy, even the simplest activities can become powerful cognitive and emotional bridges.

From preparing bread, butter, and jam to engaging in familiar experiences like identifying vegetables and recreating everyday moments, each activity is thoughtfully designed to stimulate memory, encourage participation, and evoke a sense of belonging.

These moments may seem small, but for individuals living with dementia, they hold the power to bring back recognition, comfort, and joy.

For us, it’s not just about care—it’s about preserving identity, dignity, and connection.

Care begins with those who give it

The quality of care depends on the well-being of caregivers—their emotional and mental health matters just as much.

Through moments of laughter, connection, and play, caregivers find the space to breathe, recharge, and feel supported.

Because teams that connect and laugh together, care better.

Every morning, they walk through our doors. And something shifts.
