Delhi By Foot

Delhi By Foot Experience Delhi, the way a city should be...Walk. See. Hear. Stop. Feel. Touch. Taste. Know and Love Dilli Again! [email protected] Mob:+919871181775 No?

We are DelhiByFoot.....the name says it all!! We walk, jump, crawl, tip-toe, scramble, stumble and run all over Delhi, sometimes in sneakers, flip-flops, sandals and sometimes even barefoot! But we are always on foot, exploring Delhi's heritage, traditional lifestyles, the people, their culture, foods, religions & spirituality; learning, unlearning & re-learning about this ancient city of Dhili or

Dhillika or Dehli as it has been variously known in its last 2500 years of recorded history. You get the gist, right?! Delhi...People...Photography...Foot...Food...Lovers of Saddi Dilli! We are a band of self-taught ehh…err…well…nature experts...photographers, ehrr....history geeks, activists, academics...mmm...we even blog at times...err kind of a confused lot...Well, we are just like Delhi–many layers, myriad experiences and with a method to our madness! Every nook & cranny in our city is steeped with evidences from times of the Chauhan Rajputs, Tomars, Afghan Pathans, Muslim Sultanate up till the Mughal empire, the architecture of these periods all overlapping and mixing together at times into indistinguishable masses of forts, mosques, temples & ancient buildings. Delhi has the solidity of massive rock walls of Lal Kot near Qutub Minar mixing effortlessly with the most effervescent colors of Delhi's famous bazaars. Centuries of mingling of people have infused our foods & culture with a uniqueness and the people with a unique cosmopolitan spirit, expounded by Delhi-wallahs(as we Delhites are popularly known as) who say 'Dilli hai Dilwallon ki', literally meaning Delhi is for people with a open heart. (Dil is Hindi word for heart)

DBF MuseoMay Walk 4 Museum:

It only takes a passionate heart to be willing to show people the love that you carry, wear and express. And that's exactly what Shwetashree showed us in her stories, memories, experiences and collection of textiles. She not only wears the textile she elatedly speaks about but carries it within herself, her conversations and interactions with people.

Kudos to the appetite for knowing more about Indian weaves & textiles she has helped trigger in us and all our participants!

And thanks to all those who attended ❤️

DBF MuseoMay Walk 3:

For our 3rd MuseoMay walk, we stepped into the memories of 1947, through the moving galleries of the Partition Museum.

Inside the historic Dara Shukoh Library, we traced stories of migration, loss, resilience, survival, and rebuilding… through oral histories, photographs, letters, everyday objects, and personal belongings once carried across a newly drawn border.

From the freedom movement to the aftermath of Partition, every gallery reminded us that history lives on in people, memories, and the cities they helped shape.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this deeply reflective walk ❤️

Oh Sh*t! 💩 Delhi mein yeh bhi hai...Leave your comments if you know & have visited this Museum of Delhi! 😆
Enjoy this small series, where we explore some of Delhi’s lesser-known museums & almost forgotten cultural spaces for the occasion of International Museums Day (18th May)

Delhi really has a museum for everything.. from art, history, textiles and science… to yes, even toilets!!! 😳
From royal commodes to medieval chamber pots to vintage soaps and toilets disguised as bookshelves; The Sulabh International Museum of Toilets might just be the weirdest, funniest and most unexpectedly fascinating museum in our city!

But apart from all the humour & funny p**p tales is a really powerful story.
Founded by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Padma Vibhushan awardee, India's OG Swacch Bharat dude, "India's Toilet Man", the museum traces 5000 years of sanitation history while also highlighting the fight against manual scavenging and the importance of dignity through sanitation.

So yes, you’ll laugh.
But you’ll also leave thinking.

Because even the history of toilets says a lot about society. 💭

15 years ago, DelhiByFoot (DBF) began with a simple idea: to learn, document, and share the lesser known stories of Delhi.
It started as heritage walks, a way of experiencing cities and people - through stories, spaces, diverse historical PoVs and lived experiences, across India and beyond. Now, 15 years later, it’s a well-perfected “Art of Ethical” heritage exploration and storytelling templates!

In these long years of experiences we had a chance to work with students, teachers, lawyers and young professionals from different fields. For the last 3 years we have been annually training a cohort of 12 selected individuals with diverse backgrounds to become City Ambassadors and Cultural Event Curators!

This is your chance to join the 2026 Training cohort which will help you learn how to read spaces, build & connect narratives, and design immersive heritage walks, and find new career opportunities with us at DBF.

Come learn how to make the city speak to your audiences!

Enjoy this small series, where we explore some of Delhi’s lesser-known museums & almost forgotten cultural spaces!
This one is special, as it was a trip down memory lane for our founder Ramit who felt it as the perfect museum to showcase, in line with this year’s theme of International Museums Day (18th May) as announced by the International Council of Museums, “Museums Uniting a Divided World.”

Shankar’s International Dolls Museum in ITO, was one of Ramit’s childhood favourite as it introduced him like countless other children to different countries, Indian states, their people, cultures and traditions through dolls from around the world!

Behind this magical space was K. Shankar Pillai (1902-1989) the man often called the father of political cartooning in India. While he is remembered for his sharp wit and the famous Shankar’s Weekly, But perhaps what made Shankar truly remarkable was how ahead of his time he was…

In 1957, he founded the Children’s Book Trust [CBT] to publish high quality children’s literature in India….Books written by and for Indians! A few years later, inspired by the idea that dolls could become storytellers of the world, he established Shankar’s International Dolls Museum in 1965.
The dolls museum was part of a complete project hub of an open, safe space, dedicated just for children, inculcating art, literature, as CBT also opened a children’s library Dr. B.C. Roy Memorial Children’s Library and started the famous Shankar’s International Children’s Painting Competition!

At a time when global exposure for Indian children was rare, K Shankar Pillai, created spaces for cultural exchange through books, art, dolls and painting competitions; encouraging children to look beyond borders with empathy and wonder.

And did you know, for his immense contribution to art, education and children’s culture, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1976.

Follow us as we uncover more such hidden gems and fascinating stories tucked away in the Heart of Delhi!
