For families in Nabadiganta Colony, losing access to ration meant battling hunger, exclusion, and despair. When biometric systems failed persons affected by leprosy, NLR India stepped forward with compassion and advocacy. Through collective efforts, 21 vulnerable individuals regained their right to food, dignity, and hope. This story is a reminder that true inclusion begins when no one is left behind.

NLR India proudly celebrated its 27th Foundation Day on 24th April 2026 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The event marked 27 years of dedication towards building a world free from leprosy.

We were honoured by the presence of Her Excellency Marisa Gerards as Chief Guest, whose inspiring words encouraged greater compassion, inclusion, and collective action.

The celebration brought together dignitaries, health experts, partners, and community members to discuss early detection, compassionate care, prevention, rehabilitation, inclusion and the importance of ending stigma and discrimination. The following sessions were organised during the event:
1. Technical Session I: Compassion Study Dissemination – A knowledge sharing session highlighting how compassion-based healthcare can improve health outcomes, reduce stigma and improve patient wellbeing.
2. Technical Session II: Apps for Prevention and Access to Government Schemes – A session showcasing NLRIF developed mobile applications for quality implementation of leprosy prevention (PEP App) and improve access to government welfare services (Sarkari Yojana App).
3. PEP++ Study Update – An evidence focused session presenting progress and learnings from a study testing a stronger regimen for leprosy prevention.
4. Strategic Consultation Session – A collaborative discussion with experts and programme leaders on implementation of the NLRIF mobile Apps and Compassionate Care.
5. Panel Discussion - The session discussed the strategies and scope for greater participation of the persons with lived experience of leprosy in prevention of leprosy.

For over two decades, NLR India has worked to restore dignity, improve lives, and create opportunities for persons affected by leprosy and their families.

Together, we can build a future where no one is left behind.

We are honoured to have welcomed Her Excellency Marisa Gerards as Chief Guest at NLR India’s 27th Foundation Day celebration held on 24 April at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Her gracious presence, thoughtful concern for persons affected by leprosy, and encouraging words inspired all of us. Her support sends a powerful message that together, we can overcome stigma and build a healthier, more inclusive future.

Her call to corporates to support last-mile projects for the elimination of leprosy further strengthened the need for collective action and meaningful partnerships.

We sincerely thank Her Excellency for taking the time to join us and stand with this important cause.

On World Health Day, NLR India reaffirms its commitment to building a healthier and more inclusive society for all. Health is a basic human right, yet persons affected by leprosy still face stigma and limited access to healthcare. We continue to work with communities, partners, and government systems to ensure early detection of leprosy cases, timely treatment, and dignity for all persons affected by leprosy.

Let us come together to spread awareness, break myths, and support those in need. A healthy world is possible when no one is left behind.

Together, we can create change and ensure health, hope, and equality for every person, everywhere.

Compassion Training Project aims to assess how compassion-focused training that specifically addresses stigma can improve compassion and quality of care among healthcare workers providing services to persons affected by leprosy and other stigmatizing conditions.

NLR India continues its efforts to build a more compassionate and inclusive healthcare system. As per the suggestion of Shri Shashi Prakash Jha, Mission Director, National Health Mission (NHM), Jharkhand, NLR India organised a special training to share the learnings from the compassion study across districts in Jharkhand with Medical Officers (MOs), Community Health Officers (CHOs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and district officials. He also attended the training and addressed the 53 participants. The training was organised in Koderma district.

With support from Piramal Foundation and expert trainers, this initiative reminds us that small changes in attitude can create a big impact. Together, we can reduce stigma and bring dignity, care, and hope to every life.

NLR India shares the inspiring story of Gyanti Devi from Varanasi. She was living with fear as red patches spread on her body, and she began losing sensation. With timely support from NLR India’s field team, her symptoms were identified early, and she was connected to the right care. Though unsure at first, she completed the 12-month Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) treatment. One year later, she is healthy, confident, and free from fear. Gyanti Devi’s journey shows that early detection and proper treatment can prevent disability and restore dignity.
