At NLR India, we were honoured to speak with H.E. Ms. Marisa Gerards, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to India, Nepal and Bhutan, about an issue that continues to demand our collective attention: leprosy.

In a thoughtful conversation, H.E. Ms. Gerards highlighted the importance of strengthening Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) engagement and collective action to accelerate early detection, treatment and prevention, and ultimately interrupt the transmission of leprosy.

Her recent visit to a leprosy colony in Delhi also offered a meaningful opportunity to connect with communities, listen to their experiences and see their aspirations beyond the disease.

We sincerely thank H.E. Ms. Marisa Gerards for her valuable time, empathy and commitment to advancing the cause of a leprosy-free India.

Together, through compassion, partnership and sustained action, we can help ensure that no one is left behind.

Strengthening Collective Action for Leprosy Prevention

Today, Association of People Affected by Leprosy (APAL) representatives came together in New Delhi for a meaningful workshop focused on strengthening their role in the prevention of leprosy.

The session provided an opportunity to understand the importance of early detection, early and complete treatment, and timely administration of preventive medicine. Participants actively engaged in group discussions, shared ideas, and explored practical ways APAL can contribute to each of these areas.

The discussions were positive, focused and encouraging, with a shared commitment to turn ideas into action. The active participation and exchange of experiences showed the power of working together towards a common goal.

Every step towards prevention brings us closer to a world free from leprosy. Together, with stronger advocacy, collaboration and community action, we can make prevention more effective and reach more people.

Together, let’s turn commitment into action and make a lasting difference.

Once held back by a locomotor disability, Ravindra Kumar Bhogta now moves forward with confidence and dignity. With support from NLR India Foundation, he accessed his rights, received a battery-operated tricycle, and rebuilt his life. Today, he runs his grocery shop, supports his family, and inspires his community.

For families in Nabadiganta Colony, losing access to ration meant battling hunger, exclusion, and despair. When biometric systems failed persons affected by leprosy, NLR India stepped forward with compassion and advocacy. Through collective efforts, 21 vulnerable individuals regained their right to food, dignity, and hope. This story is a reminder that true inclusion begins when no one is left behind.
