Founded by social activist Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, Sulabh International has been working in the fields of sanitation, social reform, and education in India for more than 55 years. Sulabh International Social Service Organisation has built more than 1.5 million toilets and helped more than 640 towns in India eliminate the practice of manual scavenging (cleaning excreta by hand). Our iconic toilet — t

he two-pit "Sulabh Shauchalya" — is ubiquitous not just among toilet-goers in India (where the government has built about 92 million toilets based on Sulabh's design) but also throughout the world, as its low-cost, environmentally-friendly, patent-free design has been adopted in many different developing countries as they seek improved sanitation.

Widowed Mothers of Vrindavan Make 1,100 Special Rakhis for Prime Minister; Sulabh International Organises Grand Raksha Bandhan Celebration

Vrindavan/Mathura, August 16, 2026

On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, hundreds of widowed mothers of Vrindavan set aside traditional social taboos and celebrated the festival with enthusiasm, dignity and self-respect. At a special celebration organised by Sulabh International at the historic Gopinath Temple, the mothers handcrafted more than 1,100 special rakhis for Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, expressing their affection and blessings for him as their brother.

On the occasion, Mrs. Nitya Pathak, Executive Convenor of Sulabh International, extended her warm Raksha Bandhan greetings to all the mothers and sisters present.

Mrs. Pathak said, “Celebrating Raksha Bandhan with the mothers of Vrindavan today is an extremely emotional and cherished moment for me. This celebration symbolises the compassion, sensitivity and commitment to humanity of the late Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh Sanitation, Social Reform and Human Rights Movement.”

She further said, “Dr. Pathak was my father-in-law. As his daughter-in-law, I feel immensely proud and privileged to have the opportunity to carry forward his great legacy. He began this initiative not merely to bring these mothers the joy of festivals, but also to give them dignity, affection and a sense of belonging.”

Sulabh International has been closely associated with the widowed mothers of Vrindavan since 2012. Over the years, the organisation has regularly celebrated festivals such as Holi, Diwali and Raksha Bandhan with them. Mrs. Pathak said that Sulabh International remains committed to carrying forward Dr. Pathak’s legacy and ensuring that these mothers continue to experience happiness, dignity and self-confidence in their lives.

A special highlight of this year’s celebration was the preparation of unique rakhis featuring a colourful photograph of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Mrs. Pathak said that five mothers will travel to Delhi with the rakhis and baskets of sweets to present these gifts to Prime Minister Modi, whom they regard as their “brother.”

During the celebration, the mothers sang devotional songs and bhajans, danced with joy, and enthusiastically decorated the rakhis. The entire atmosphere at the temple was filled with devotion, happiness and festive spirit.

Concluding her address, Mrs. Pathak said, “All of you mothers are our strength, our inspiration and an integral part of our family. The Sulabh family will always stand by you. I pray that Banke Bihari Ji and Maa Kali continue to shower their blessings upon all of you.”

The 80th Independence Day was celebrated at the Sulabh International campus this morning with patriotic fervour and a deep sense of remembrance. The national flag was unfurled by the President of Sulabh International, Shri Kumar Dilip, in the presence of members of the Sulabh family, students and staff.

Children of Sulabh Public School sang the National Anthem and paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose courage, sacrifice and determination secured India’s independence. Their participation brought alive the spirit of patriotism and reminded the gathering of the values and responsibilities that accompany the freedom we cherish.

The occasion holds a particularly poignant significance for Sulabh International, as 15 August also marks the death anniversary of its visionary founder, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak. A pioneering social reformer, Dr. Pathak devoted his life to sanitation, human dignity and the upliftment of marginalised communities. His passing on Independence Day has forever intertwined this national celebration with a deeply personal moment of remembrance for the Sulabh family.

Amid this confluence of pride and remembrance, tricolour balloons were released into the sky, symbolising hope, freedom and the aspirations of a rising India.

The gathering reaffirmed its commitment to national duty, respect and compassion for fellow citizens, and to playing an active role in India’s development. As the country moves forward towards the vision of a Viksit Bharat, the occasion served as a reminder that true nation-building lies not only in celebrating our freedom but also in using that freedom to build a cleaner, healthier, more inclusive and dignified society for all.

The partnership between Sulabh International School of Sanitation and Sociology of Sanitation, South Africa, and Africa for Africa Women has reached an important milestone with the launch of a sanitary pad manufacturing unit in East London under our Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) Initiative.

This milestone represents much more than the launch of a manufacturing unit. It marks the beginning of an initiative with the potential to create meaningful and transformative change in menstrual health, hygiene, livelihoods, and women’s empowerment across South Africa.

By enabling local women to manufacture affordable sanitary products, the initiative seeks to create sustainable livelihood opportunities while improving access to menstrual hygiene products for women and girls—ensuring greater dignity, affordability, accessibility, and choice.

We are deeply grateful to Africa for Africa Women for their partnership and extend our heartfelt appreciation to Bea Hakkula for her warmth, trust, and unwavering support in bringing this shared vision to life.

The launch was attended by Ms. Abha Kumar Sr. Vice President, Sulabh International, and Ms. Arunima Chauhan, Consultant, Sulabh International, marking the beginning of what we hope will grow into a wider movement advancing menstrual health, dignity, livelihoods, and opportunities for women and girls across South Africa.

The honour and recognition received along this journey have made this partnership even more meaningful and strengthened our commitment to taking this initiative forward. We look forward to building on this milestone, expanding its reach, and creating lasting impact in the communities we serve.

Together, we can transform menstrual hygiene from a challenge into an opportunity—for better health, greater dignity, sustainable livelihoods, and women’s empowerment.

Strengthening Women’s Role in Viksit Bharat

Women’s empowerment becomes truly meaningful when opportunity translates into independence, participation and dignity.

This was among the key messages shared by Mrs. Nitya Pathak, Executive Convenor, Sulabh International, at the Women Leaders’ Conclave 2026, held at the India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi. Mrs. Pathak participated in the two-day conclave as Guest of Honour.

Addressing the theme “Claiming Equity in Viksit Bharat,” she reflected on the strength women bring to families and communities and stressed the importance of creating pathways for their economic self-reliance.

She also shared examples from Sulabh International’s women-focused programmes, including digital literacy initiatives in Tonk and Alwar in Rajasthan and kitchen gardening training in Maharashtra. Such initiatives demonstrate how practical skills, education and livelihood opportunities can strengthen not only financial independence but also women’s confidence, participation and position within society.

The programme also celebrated the social vision and legacy of late Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh Sanitation, Social Reform and Human Rights Movement. Dr. Rashmi Singh, Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Delhi, who attended as Chief Guest, commended Mrs. Nitya Pathak for carrying forward this legacy.

Among those sharing their perspectives at the conclave were Dr. Nirja Mattoo, Prof. B. S. Sahay, Dr. Ritu Singh, Dr. Aruna Oswal, Dr. (Mrs.) Pankaj Mittal and Ms. Rekha Modi, along with other distinguished guests and women leaders.
