ETASHA Society

ETASHA Society ETASHA Society is a not-for-profit organization working to skill underprivileged communities for sustained employment and income generation.

We envision a future where every Indian is self-reliant, has self-worth and leads a dignified and productive life. For too many of young Indians, the country's continuing economic success story means little. Bright, ambitious and talented teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle to complete school education only to find that they are still ill-prepared for the fast-moving world beyond the

school gates. Sub-standard education, outdated career advice and unrealistic expectations mean that many young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are excluded from India’s growth and caught in a vicious cycle of poor education, lack of opportunity and low –paid work. ETASHA aims to change that. We provide career guidance, vocational and employability skills training and placement for young people from disadvantaged communities. Delivering specialist training from our 2 Career Development Centres located in poor communities in Delhi, ETASHA also provides training for other organisations across India such as Don Bosco, Butterflies, CASP- Plan and the governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

For over 20 years, ETASHA SOCIETY has been enabling youth from underserved communities to build dignified careers. More than 22,000 young people have been trained and placed in organised sector jobs, with over 60% women participation, earning up to ₹40,000 per month.

When a young woman earns, it strengthens her family, delays early marriage, builds confidence and creates new possibilities for the next generation.

In 2021, Noor was one of the women supported to set up her own micro-enterprise under Project Mazbooti by ETASHA, an initiative aimed at enabling women entrepreneurs and supported by CSR of SMS Group India. Noor runs her tailoring and production unit in Sangam Vihar, Delhi. As a single woman, ensuring financial stability for her daily needs and the education of her three children has always been a constant concern.
ETASHA’s entrepreneurship model enabled her to utilise her tailoring and crochet skills to build her own enterprise. Today, she is not just self-reliant, she has become a job provider for other women. Her journey was supported through skills training, business management, incubation support, financial literacy and marketing linkages. ETASHA has continuously mentored her and many entrepreneurs like her to build sustainable, income-generating enterprises.

This is a proud moment for ETASHA, for SMS Group India, and for all those individuals who contributed to establishing the Aruna Usha Incubation Fund, which has enabled women like Noor to establish and grow their businesses. One woman built a sustainable enterprise and went on to create nine additional livelihoods within her community, a great example of the multiplier effect.

At the recent National CSR Summit organised by the Times Foundation at Bharat Mandapam, Noor Jahan’s journey was recognised as that of a Social Innovator. The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, corporate leaders, and philanthropists. A commemorative moment with the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, reflected our shared vision of accelerating India’s economic growth. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Times Foundation and The Times Group for creating platforms that bring grassroots changemakers to the forefront and recognise journeys of transformation, from beneficiaries to contributors.
This milestone reaffirms that collaborative investment in women’s entrepreneurship strengthens local economies and creates tangible impact within families and communities. We invite more partners to join us in scaling women-led enterprises that accelerate economic growth and become job creators in our economy.

ETASHA’s work with women has focused on one core belief that Economic Independence is a powerful driver of social transformation.

By enabling women from low income communities to build enterprises, strengthen leadership and make informed financial decisions, we support outcomes that extend far beyond income. Families become more secure, children access better opportunities and communities grow more resilient.

This is what sustained women’s empowerment looks like.

Join us to strengthen women’s economic autonomy.

Why we work with women?

Women’s economic participation plays a vital role in building resilient families and inclusive communities. Women from marginalised and low income backgrounds continue to be left out due to limited access to education, skills and supportive environments. Even when women have the aspiration to contribute economically, these barriers often stand in the way.

When they do not have opportunities to become financially independent, families remain vulnerable to uncertainty. Children’s education, health and future aspirations are often affected and limited income reduces choices and long term stability.

ETASHA works with women because economic independence is about much more than earning an income. It brings dignity, confidence and the ability to make informed decisions. When women build their own enterprises, they experience a deep sense of self reliance and gain a stronger voice within their families and communities. The impact of this independence extends across generations.

What we Do with Youth?

ETASHA Society is a proven non profit organisation working since 2006 to strengthen livelihoods for youth from low income communities across Delhi, NCR and Haryana.

We work with youth who are often overlooked by the formal skilling ecosystem, primarily 10th and 12th pass youth from government schools who are not in full time higher education. By equipping them with market relevant vocational skills, employability training, and direct job placements, ETASHA bridges the critical gap between education and employment.

Our youth programs deliver measurable outcomes through placement linked vocational training, employability skills development in government institutions, and entrepreneurship support that enables young people to build sustainable enterprises. This integrated approach supports workforce readiness while addressing long term economic vulnerability.

For CSR and ESG leaders, partnering with ETASHA enables high impact investments aligned with UN SDGs including No Poverty, Quality Education, Gender Equality and Decent Work and Economic Growth, as well as national priorities on skill development and employment generation.

India is at a make-or-break moment.

Nearly 70% of our population is working-age - young, full of energy, and ready to drive massive growth. But this demographic dividend is fragile and slipping away fast.
The harsh reality: Millions of young people finish school or college brimming with dreams, yet end up unemployed or in jobs far below their potential. It’s not a lack of ambition - it’s a glaring skills gap. Classroom learning often doesn’t match what employers need, career guidance is missing, and workplace readiness is overlooked.

Latest reports show educated youth unemployment remains high, with only about 42-56% of graduates truly employable for organized sector roles (India Skills Report data). This isn’t just heartbreaking for families, it’s a ticking bomb for India’s future economy.
At ETASHA, for over 20 years we’ve been bridging this gap for youth from low-income communities with practical skilling, real guidance, and sustained support so they land meaningful jobs and thrive.

This is everyone’s responsibility. Employers, CSR leaders, institutions let’s join hands to equip India’s youth.

With the support of British Asian Trust and BT Group, ETASHA is implementing an ongoing Finance Workshop Series aimed at strengthening career readiness among youth enrolled in our BFSI skill development program. As part of this series, BT Group employee volunteers recently conducted an interactive session focused on Career Pathways in Finance, following the series kick off session led by Nicky Parr in the month of November.

The workshop explored key themes including career opportunities within the finance sector, required educational qualifications and diplomas, potential organisations to pursue, and long term career progression. Youth participants actively engaged with professionals, asking critical questions and gaining practical insights into how finance roles function in real workplace settings. These conversations helped demystify the sector and provided clarity on navigating early career decisions.

This session is one of six planned engagements where finance professionals from BT group will continue to interact with youth on critical finance concepts and career oriented learning. Such structured exposure builds confidence, challenges common career myths, and supports first generation learners in making a more informed and confident transition into the world of work.
