I know I am close to offending Arooj Aftab into disinterest. I have sidelined the bulk of the influences that go into her sound and, for three questions straight, have focused on investigating where and when the NYC-based Pakistani-American artist chose to draw on classical music.

“I wouldn't say that it's classical music. You can tell that I'm from a South Asian region when you listen to my music,” she corrects me, not for the first time but now more firmly. “But you can't really say, ‘oh it sounds like she's classically trained.’ It definitely doesn't sound like that.”

New Delhi's Hrithik Arora aka SYEYL says he had been "losing touch with his own artistic voice" by making music primarily for function and bookings, before turning inward for his upcoming EP 'Music Is The Answer'.

Over the past couple of months, as 'Selector Pro: Women In Electronic Music' completed 7 years since its last edition and its partners Ableton deepened their commitment of making music production more accessible through region-specific pricings, rent-to-own options and learning-enabling updates, we looked at the alumni that came out of the British Council-supported programme and have since defined the alternative music space of India.

Avril Stormy Unger now hosts her own queer-centering skill-sharing events and parties, Lush Lata became the first woman from India to DJ at the Berghain, Pardafash has had some seminal releases via platforms like shesaid.so x Azadi Records and ONNO Collective, Sijya's music has seen a burgeoning career with releases on labels like One Little Independent and recent performances at Netherlands' Rewire Festival, Skulk has emerged as a unique voice with mutliple albums in her discography, and Suyasha is about to open for The Foo Fighters with her band Still In Therapy.

"Just look at how many musicians came out of these workshops," says Skulk while Lush Lata remarks: "An experience like Selector Pro can really usher in the new wave of creatives and harness a sense of community for our young creatives!"
