When Communities Take Ownership, Every Child Counts

Education is not only a school’s responsibility. The whole community has a role to play.

In Ghatagaon Block, ASPIRE has begun the process of handing over the Village Education Register (VER) to Child Rights Protection Committees (CRPF), strengthening community ownership for children’s education and continued school attendance.

Through community meetings, rallies and dialogues, ASPIRE has been creating awareness about the importance of keeping every child connected to education. The VER helps communities keep track of every child and follow up with those at risk of dropping out or remaining out of school.

As part of the handover process, meetings are being organised with community members and CRPF members at the habitation and village levels. ASPIRE staff explain the purpose and use of the VER and share the updated records with the community.

The meetings conclude with a shared oath for children’s education, reaffirming the community’s responsibility to ensure that every child remains in school and gets the opportunity to learn.

A register may hold the names of children. But it is the community that can help ensure that every name remains connected to a school.

Empowering Children to Lead, Participate and Care

ASPIRE is taking a step towards creating spaces where children can participate, take responsibility and make a difference in their own schools.

Through the Child Cabinet, students in primary schools in Odisha are encouraged to take on leadership roles and participate in the day-to-day life of their school.

From promoting personal hygiene and cleanliness to supporting a positive learning environment, helping with mid-day meal management and encouraging regular school attendance, children learn the values of leadership, responsibility, teamwork and democratic participation.

The Child Cabinet is more than a student group. It gives children a voice, a sense of ownership and the opportunity to learn by doing.

When children participate, they learn to lead. When they lead, they begin to shape their school community.

Nourishing Children, Strengthening Communities 🌱

This September, ASPIRE is observing National Nutrition Month (Rashtriya Poshan Maah) in collaboration with the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), with a focus on creating greater awareness around nutrition and preventing malnutrition.

The month brings together communities, Anganwadi Workers and frontline workers to promote healthy nutrition practices for:

👧 Children under 6 years
🌸 Adolescent girls
🤰 Pregnant and lactating women

The focus includes dietary diversity, breastfeeding and complementary feeding, anaemia prevention, locally available nutritious foods, and early childhood care and development.

Through awareness and community participation, the effort is to help families make informed nutrition choices and ensure that every child gets the nourishment needed to grow, learn and thrive.

🔬 When Curiosity Takes Centre Stage!

Barajamda Cluster, Noamundi Block, West Singhbhum

Children turned into young scientists at a Science Exhibition, presenting models and experiments on light, water, plants, combustion, metals and non-metals, physical and chemical changes, and more.

From demonstrating the law of reflection to observing the bright flame of a burning magnesium ribbon, children explored science through experiments, observation and hands-on learning.

With 127 parents joining in to see their children’s work, the exhibition became a wonderful space for children to share what they had learned, explain their ideas and build confidence in communicating their learning.

Preparing Shishu Sevikas for Joyful Early Learning 🌱

ASPIRE, Ghasipura, organised a training programme for Shishu Sevikas supporting children in Bal Vatika. The session focused on care, safety, foundational child development and the roles and responsibilities of working with 5–6-year-old children.

Through practical activities and the use of Teaching-Learning Materials (TLMs), the training also explored ways to make classrooms more engaging and encourage every child to participate actively.

Building confident caregivers, creating joyful spaces for children to learn and grow.
