Pratham is among India’s largest NGOs, working across 25 states to support children’s learning, women’s education, and youth skilling—reaching 6M+ annually through community programs and govt partnerships. In a country with 28 states, over 600 districts, and more than 350 million children, it is a monumental task to ensure that every child is literate – a task that the government cannot accomplish

alone. This thought gave birth to Pratham Education Foundation in 1995 with the aim of providing pre-school education to children in the slums of Mumbai city. Since then, the organization has grown to become one of India’s largest non-governmental organization working to provide education to the underprivileged children of India. To make its programmes sustainable and self-propelled in the long run, Pratham works closely with the school systems and the communities involved.

What does school readiness actually look like? See it in action at the School Readiness Melas (SRMs) being conducted across multiple states as part of CAMaL Ki Taiyyari — Pratham's summer initiative to prepare children aged 3–6 for formal schooling.

Each mela features five activity stalls focused on key developmental domains. As children move through these stalls, parents observe, participate, and gain an understanding of their child's readiness. At the end of the mela, they receive a report card, a simple, personalised snapshot of where their child is. They are also introduced to easy activities they can continue at home, so that children walk into school confidently and with a readiness to learn.

Thousands of children from Grades 5 and 6 across Bihar are coming together this month for Summer Camp 2026—an initiative led by the Education Department, Government of Bihar, with support from Pratham—to strengthen foundational reading and mathematical skills as they prepare for the new academic year.

From role play and drawing to group discussions and games, children have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and learn along the way. But the most awaited part of each day is the storytelling sessions from Kahani Train, a collection of short stories in multiple regional languages developed collaboratively by Pratham, Rekhta Foundation, and Nayi Dhara.

Facilitated by Shiksha Sevaks (government-supported community volunteers) and rooted in strong local community involvement, this initiative aims to foster reading comprehension, communication skills, creative thinking, and a growing enthusiasm for learning among children.

Children make meaning of the world based on what they see around them. And so, when it comes to developing basic reading skills, the content needs to reflect everyday realities and settings.

In conversation with Meenakshi Ramesh, CEO of Pratham, Rukmini Banerji, Senior Advisor and Former CEO of Pratham, talks about developing teaching-learning materials based on the learning patterns of children.

As children aged 3-6 transition from Anganwadi centres and pre-primary sections into Grade 1, opportunities to build foundational skills become especially important.

CAMaL Ki Taiyyari is Pratham's summer initiative, in collaboration with P&G Shiksha, designed to reach children, families, and Anganwadi workers at this crucial moment of transition. As part of this initiative, children participate in School Readiness Melas (SRMs) — moving through activity stalls across key developmental domains: language, numeracy, cognition, motor skills, and social-emotional development. Mothers and caregivers observe and later receive a simple report card that helps them better understand their child's development and readiness for school. They are also oriented on simple learning activities that they can do at home with their children.

Play is an integral part of Pratham's programs for children, because they learn best when they are engaged, expressive, and free to imagine. From our work with mothers and Anganwadis to our learning camps in communities, we use games, songs, stories, and hands-on activities to build foundational skills.

But beyond learning, play is also where friendships are formed, confidence is found, and childhood is truly lived.

Swipe through to see children learn, create, and grow, all while having fun and sharing a few laughs.

The District Collector Office and Police Department of Nandurbar, Maharashtra, have come together with Pratham Education Foundation to launch Mission Saksham 3.0, a collaborative initiative focused on expanding skill development and employment opportunities for young people across the district.

Guided by District Collector, Ms. Mittali Sethi, Superintendent of Police, Ms. Ashwini Sanap, and CEO of Zilla Parishad, Mr. Naman Goyal, the initiative—first launched in January 2025—aims to connect more than 2,000 youth with industry-relevant skill training, career guidance, and placement support. Pratham runs over 190 training centres and provides localised community training across 18 states and 1 Union Territory in India. As children aged 3–6 prepare to transition from Anganwadi centres and pre-primary sections into formal schooling, the summer months become a critical window for building foundational skills.

CAMaL Ki Taiyyari is Pratham's summer school readiness initiative running across multiple states in the country. At its heart are Anganwadi workers who are conducting School Readiness Melas (SRMs) across communities and guiding mothers in supporting their children's learning at home.

To equip them for this role, Pratham conducted trainings across states, familiarising Anganwadi workers with the developmental activity stalls at the melas and orienting them on how to guide mothers through the digital content packages shared as part of the initiative.

Keep an eye out for what will unfold at these SRMs.
