Association for Environment and Development Research

Association for Environment and Development Research (AEDR), a non-profit organisation, is registered under Indian Societies Act 1860, with the objective of conducting and disseminating studies relating to India's economic and social development with special reference to their interaction with environmental factors. (Detailed objectives at www.aedr.org)

AEDR, established in 1997, has successfully completed more than 10 research projects (listed at Annexure-A, on reverse page) involving economic policy analyses, developmental and environmental issues. Our sponsors include British High Commission, Delhi Administration, Govt. of Nagaland, Indian Council for South Asian Studies (ICSAS), IDRC, Ministry of Textiles (Govt. of India), central Zoo authority, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Govt. of India, IDRC Canada and Department of the North East Region (DONER). AEDR has also conducted seminar/Conferences from time to time on different topics of national importance.

AEDR has leading experts and consultants, drawn from national universities/ institutes, Govt. organizations, in the area of Micro-economics, Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Econometrics, Resource Economics, Statistics, International Trade, Urban Planning and Problems of Agriculture Sector of India.

With above background and expertise, AEDR takes up studies on developmental, trade related, environmental aspects, particularly policy matters.

Ø Research Projects

1. “Alternative Strategy of Industrialization: A Trade Model of Growth” consultancy assignment from, Govt. of Nagaland.

2. A pilot study on “the role of Nagaland in the North-East trade corridor”.

3. “Trade Prospects in the SAARC Region” sponsored by the Indian Council for South Asian Studies (ICSAS).

4. "An Alternative Strategy of Industrialisation for the North East: A Case Study of Assam.” sponsored by IDRC,

5. Long-term project under the Baba Sahib Ambedkar Hastashilpa Vikas Yojana funded by the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India for cane and bamboo workers

6. Social and Educational Impact of Deer Parks and Zoos” sponsored by Central Zoo Authority, India

7. Two research projects on environmental problems in Delhi funded by the Delhi Administration.

• “Industrial Pollution: A Study of the Policy Options for Delhi”.

• “Rain Water Harvesting: A Costing and Extension Study”.

8. Outreach programs creating sensitivity on WTO issues in India entrusted by the British High Commission, Delhi.

9. “The Impact of Indian RTAs on the Manufacturing Sector” commissioned by Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India

10. Special focus on the North-east India

• AEDR studied the development problems of Assam-, a study from the IDRC, Canada.

• Prof. Pant has been Economic Advisor to Nagaland since 2002-2003 and in charge of preparing the state and district Human Development Reports.

• Prof. Barua and Prof. Pant are also two of the principal authors of the NER Vision 2020, the official document of the Department of the North East Region (DONER).

• Prof. Barua was one of the authors of the Meghalaya Vision 2030 document published by National Institute of Public Finance & Policy.

• North-East Regional Office of AEDR in Guwahati, Assam has been set up for special focus on the region.

Ø Seminar and workshops

AEDR conducts Seminar and Worksop on burning economic and environmental issues from time to time. To name a few-

• "Research Priority Setting in Forestry" at the Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla and the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.

• "Application of Economics and Statistics to Forestry" at the Arid Forest Research Institute, Jodhpur.

• National seminar on " Indian Economy in Transition: Developmental and Environmental Issues".
