In recent years, more men have begun using acid as a weapon against women, especially when spurned. Easy availability of acid facilitates the use of acid as a weapon. The apex court's order was long overdue, since governments have been dragging their feet in checking the sale of acid. The Supreme Court of India has asked the Central Government to come up with a comprehensive plan for compensation
of victims of acid attacks. India figures among the countries with the largest number of acid attacks due the governments’ non-serious approach. The National Crime Records Bureau has no idea of the exact number of acid attacks, as it does not record such crimes separately. NGOs working with victims say that at least a hundred women are subjected to acid attacks in the country annually. Karnataka alone saw 65 cases of acid attacks between 1999 and 2008. Acid attacks should be treated under a separate category of brutal crime, as the victims are, often, left to live isolated lives, hiding their disfigured faces and mutilated bodies from the people around. While some victims do die after being attacked with acid, most of them survive, but are denied a normal life as this attack destroys the person, physically and psychologically. So damaging is the impact of acid that the face of a person melts and the head gets fused to the shoulder. So terrible is its impact that many victims prefer not to live and take their own lives. An acid attack is thus far worse than pre-meditated murder. It must be dealt with as such. Restricting sale of acid is only the first step. We need a separate and specific law to punish offenders. Stringent punishment including life imprisonment is required. Although the Law Commission recommended separate legislation in 2008, a separate and stern law to tackle acid attacks is still to see the light of day. To ease the suffering of victims we need to provide them with maximum support. Generous compensation and rehabilitation will ease their transformation from victims to survivors. Stop Acid Attacks एक अभियान है, तेजाब से जलाई गई लड़कियों को हिम्मत और लड़ने का हौसला देने का, उन्हे आत्मनर्भर बनाने का, समाज में एक सम्मानजनक और सहज जिन्दगी देने का। हम चाहते हैं कि महिलाएं जिन्हे समाज के कुछ वीभत्सतम अपराधों में शुमार तेजाब हमले से जूझना पड़ा है, खुद को अकेला और कमजोर महसूस न करें। एक जिम्मेदार नागरिक होने के नाते हमें अपनी सामाजिक जिम्मेदारियां समझते हुए इन महिलाओं को उनकी नई जिन्दगी की राहें आसान करने में अपना योगदान जरूर देना चाहिये। यह वाकई दुखद है कि २१वीं सदी में भी समाज में महिलाओं पर तेजाब से हमले जैसे जघन्य अपराध हो रहे हैं और समाज इन अपराधों पर कोई अंकुश नहीं लगा पा रहा है। दुनिया भर में महिलाओं पर तमाम तरह के अपराध होते हैं और तेजाब से हमला इनसे से सबसे वीभत्स अत्याचारों में से एक है। एक आकड़े के मुताबिक दुनिया भर में हर साल 500 से भी ज्यादा तेजाब हमले होते हैं और भारत शीर्ष के उन चार देशों में से एक है जहां ये हमले होते हैं। इस मुद्दे पर काम कर रहे विशेषज्ञों के मुताबिक तेजाब से होने वाले सौ में से सत्तर हमले रिपोर्ट ही नहीं हो पाते हैं।
भारत में तेजाब पीड़ित महिलाओं की स्थिति बेहद खराब है। सरकार की ओर से इन पीड़ितों को किसी भी तरह की सहायता का प्रावधान नहीं है। हाल के कुछ महीनों से तेजाब हमले के प्रति राज्य सरकारों में एक चेतना आई है और इस तरह के मामलों में राज्य स्तर पर कानून बनाए गए हैं। तेजाब के हमलों की घटनाओं पर गंभीर चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए उच्चतम न्यायालय ने भी फरवरी महीने में केन्द्र सरकार को सभी राज्यों और केन्द्र शासित प्रदेशों के मुख्य सचिवों की बैठक बुलाकर इस समस्या पर विचार करने का निर्देश दिया है। न्यायालय ने कहा कि इस बैठक में तेजाब के हमलों के पीडितों के उपचार और उन्हें मुआवजा देने हेतु कानून की रूप रेखा तैयार की जाए. असंतोष जाहिर करते हुए कोर्ट ने कहा कि तेजाब की बिक्री को नियंत्रित करने और महिलाओं पर हमले के लिए इसके इस्तेमाल पर अंकुश लगाने के केन्द्र के उपाय पर्याप्त नहीं हैं।
