PASSING THE BATON
From Sainik School Rewa to Sainik School Bijapur
Leading the Indian Navy, Inspiring a Nation ⚓

In a proud moment for the entire Sainik School fraternity, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, an alumnus of Sainik School Bijapur, has assumed charge as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy on 31 May 2026.

He succeeds Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, an illustrious alumnus of Sainik School Rewa, who concludes a remarkable 41-year journey of dedicated service to the nation.

This is more than just a change of command.

It is the passing of the baton from one Sainik School alumnus to another—proof that the values of discipline, leadership, integrity, and service instilled in Sainik Schools continue to guide India's highest military leadership.

From the classrooms and parade grounds of Sainik Schools to the command of one of the world's most powerful navies, the legacy lives on.

Congratulations to Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on assuming command, and heartfelt gratitude to Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi for his extraordinary service to the nation.

We Congratulate Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, presently the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Western Naval Command, to become the next Chief of Naval Staff (CNS). He will assume charge on May 31, 2026, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi.

The appointment, announced today, marks a significant leadership transition in the Indian Navy. Vice Admiral Swaminathan, a highly decorated and experienced flag officer with nearly four decades of distinguished service, brings extensive operational expertise, strategic insight, and proven leadership in personnel management and training to the apex position of the service.

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987. A specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare, he has held a wide array of operational, staff, and training appointments throughout his career.

Early in his service, he commanded missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, followed by the Kora-class corvette INS Kulish. As a Captain, he commanded the guided-missile destroyer INS Mysore and subsequently served as the second Commanding Officer of the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya (from November 2015), India’s premier naval asset. Under his command, the carrier participated in the International Fleet Review 2016 and was adjudged the Best Ship of the Western Fleet. Promoted to Flag rank, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, where he played a pivotal role in naval training and established the Indian Naval Safety Team. He subsequently assumed command as Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST) in March 2019 and later as Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet in February 2020. In this capacity, he led significant bilateral exercises, including JIMEX 2020 with the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force. In February 2021, he was appointed Flag Officer Defence Advisory Group (FODAG) and Advisor on Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India. Promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral on November 4, 2021, he served as Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command, followed by Controller of Personnel Services and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters. On May 1, 2024, he assumed charge as the 46th Vice Chief of Naval Staff, succeeding Vice Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi upon the latter’s elevation as CNS.

He took over as FOC-in-C, Western Naval Command, on July 31, 2025 (formally August 1, 2025), succeeding Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh. Bijapur Sainik School shaped my life, career: Vice Admiral

The elevation of Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of Naval Staff has brought immense pride and celebration to Sainik School Bijapur, where the officer spent his formative years and laid the foundation for his distinguished naval career.

An alumnus of the 1983 batch, Krishna Swaminathan will assume office as the Chief of Naval Staff on May 31, 2026, becoming the first person from Karnataka to head the Indian Navy. Karnataka had earlier produced legendary military leaders such as Field Marshal KM Cariappa, General KS Thimmayya and General GG Bewoor who brought immense honour to the nation through their distinguished service in the Indian Army.

Born to teachers D Swaminathan and Shanta Swaminathan in Bengaluru, he completed his primary education at Bishop Cotton Boys' School, before joining Sainik School Bijapur in 1977. Former students of the school, popularly known as "Ajeets", described his elevation as a proud moment for the institution. Alumni said the discipline, leadership training and values imparted at Sainik School played a decisive role in shaping Krishna into one of the country's finest naval officers.

International Ajeets president and retired IPS officer Gopal Hosur recalled Krishna as a humble yet exceptionally professional officer. He said Krishna's leadership qualities and organisational abilities were visible even during alumni events organised in Mumbai.

Senior advocate Satish Maneshindhe, another alumnus of the school, said Krishna had displayed leadership traits from his student days itself.
"He was an all-rounder and school captain, a position given only to the best performer. Even then, it was clear that he was destined for greater responsibilities," he said. Maneshindhe said there were several indications in recent years that Krishna Swaminathan would rise to the Navy's top post. He recalled that while serving as Vice Admiral of the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, Krishna stayed at the iconic official residence near the Gateway of India, a residence associated with several officers who later became Navy chiefs. He also pointed out that Krishna frequently accompanied the defence minister on foreign tours, reflecting the confidence the Govt of India had in him.

"That itself showed the trust reposed in him and indicated that he was being groomed for the top responsibility," Maneshindhe said. Recalling an alumni golf tournament in Mumbai, he added, "At that time itself I had said Krishna would become the Chief of Naval Staff, and today that has come true," he said.

Krishna Swaminathan himself has repeatedly acknowledged the role of Sainik School Bijapur in his journey. In a letter written to a junior in March 1984, shortly after passing out, he described the institution as "dearer to us than our very homes" and credited it for his knowledge, education and values. The Vice Admiral said the school instilled integrity, honesty and commitment towards national service among students. "Sainik School Bijapur taught us to place the nation and the organisation above personal interests. The ethos of the Indian Navy is the same," he said, while also expressing gratitude to his parents for their guidance and support. Alumni and staff members said Krishna Swaminathan's rise to the top naval post stands as a testimony to the institution's legacy of nurturing discipline, leadership and patriotism among young cadets.
