Kaivalya Plays

Kaivalya Plays A performing arts and production company based in New Delhi, India. We create original and adapted work across a wide variety of forms for a global audience. Hi.

Learn more about us on www.kaivalyaplays.org We are Kaivalya Plays. Kaivalya Plays is a performing arts and production company led by Varoon P. Anand as its Artistic Director and Gaurav Singh Nijjer as General Manager. With its root in the cultural capital of India, New Delhi, the group has created innovative artistic experiences with a focus on community-building. Over the course of seven years,

they have worked consistently, been very noisy, and built associations with the institutions all across India. The team has worked with many diplomatic institutions like the Embassy of Spain and Instituto Cervantes, Embassy of Argentina, Embassy of Ecuador, Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhawan in Delhi and Bangalore, among others, to produce cross-cultural theatre productions in English, Hindi, and Spanish which have been staged at festivals like Gender Bender, Old World Theatre Festival, Reconnect Theatre Festival, Short & Sweet Delhi, among others. The team has also undertaken a slew of community-building initiatives through theatre training workshops, dramatized readings, installations, festivals, and more. Their artistic training is grounded in spontaneous improvisation, lying at the intersection of short-form improvisations (for performances and workshop) and applied improvisation (with a focus on mental health, business, education, training). Their improv group CueLess improv was one of Delhi's first improv teams and became the training ground for a generation of improv performers and heads of new teams. In late 2018, Kaivalya Plays created Unravel, an interactive theatre production produced under the Refunction theatre grant by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan. The play brings conversations about mental health to the fore, with the ensemble using improv theatre and audience suggestions to devise the final performance on the spot. Kaivalya Plays also kick-started the Theatre Management Fellowship, a one-of-a-kind training program for strategic management and creative administration of theatre. They have also created Headspace, a national improv for mental wellness project. Over the last year, they have engaged over 2000+ audiences from India, Spain, Colombia, Germany, UK, US and more countries. They have worked with corporates like Atlan, IFFCO, Uber, Dalberg, Floh and more. Their work and associated projects have been featured in India Today, The Hindu, Indian Express, Financial Express among others.

What a night!

Hundreds of you packed into the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, straw hats and all, to celebrate Bloomsday with us, and turned an evening devoted to a “difficult” Irish modernist into the easiest thing in the world to love.

Our immersive dramatised reading of ‘Counterparts’ from James Joyce’s Dubliners used sound and light not to change a single word of Joyce, but to bring the Dublin he wrote about to life on stage.

Thank you to Debdutta Chakraborty and The Print for the wonderful piece capturing the spirit of the evening (swipe through to read)

Thank you the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art for opening your space and your audience to Joyce once again.

And to the Embassy of Ireland and Ambassador Kevin Kelly, thank you for your faith in this collaboration, and for proving that more than a century on, Joyce still feels unexpectedly contemporary.

Last night, a room full of people gathered in Delhi to listen to words written more than a century ago, and James Joyce still felt remarkably alive.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art for our Annual Bloomsday Celebration and immersive dramatized reading of Counterparts by Kaivalya Plays.

We’re grateful to our partners at the Embassy of Ireland in India and KNMA for their support, and to Bahrisons Booksellers for partnering with us on the literary quiz and book giveaway.

A special shoutout to Caitriona Ní Thréasaigh and Shaiza Aching for their moving performance Molly Bloom’s celebrated soliloquy.

Most of all, thank you to our audience for spending the evening with Joyce’s characters, stories, and language, and for the conversations that continued long after the performance had ended.

Bloomsday Week continues tomorrow at Triveni Kala Sangam with the premiere of James Joyce Immersive: Araby, the opening of JOYCEWALE: Notes on Photos, a Diary between Delhi and Dublin by Mayank Austen Soofi, the announcement of our school competition winners, and another literary quiz with book giveaways.

We look forward to seeing many of you there.

🎭 What can improvisation teach us about the mind?

As part of James Joyce Immersive Week, join us for a Spontaneous Improvisation Acting Workshop exploring creativity, instinct, and the spontaneous flow of thought. Just as Joyce’s stream of consciousness writing captured the inner workings of the mind, improvisation invites us to respond in the moment, without scripts, plans, or predetermined outcomes.

Through theatre games, storytelling exercises, and collaborative performance, participants will discover how imagination emerges through action, listening, and play.

We’re delighted to be featured in The New Indian Express in a piece by Adithi Reena Ajith on our James Joyce Immersive programme, presented by Kaivalya Plays in collaboration with the Embassy of Ireland in India.

Over the past year, we’ve explored the life and work of James Joyce through immersive dramatized readings, workshops, school outreach programmes, exhibitions, and public events. Through stories from Dubliners, we’ve been asking how literature can be experienced not just through reading, but through performance, conversation, and shared encounter.

Thank you to Adithi for the thoughtful article, and to everyone who has been part of this journey.

As we approach Bloomsday 2026, we’re looking forward to sharing the culmination of the programme with performances of Counterparts, Eveline, and Araby, alongside workshops, literary quizzes, school events, and the launch of Joycewale.
