On 21 August, we remember and pay tribute to the victims and survivors of terrorism. On 22 August, we commemorate all those subjected to violence because of their religion or belief.
These observances are distinct, yet they affirm one shared principle: every human life must be protected—whether the violence inflicted upon it is formally recognized as terrorism or takes another form, including persecution, hate crimes, mob violence or attacks by State and non-State actors.
In the absence of a just peace shaped by and for peoples, the international community must strive to represent the best of humanity. Our commitment cannot depend on how violence is classified, who commits it or whom it targets. Every victim deserves recognition, justice and support; every survivor deserves to be heard; and every community deserves to live and worship—or choose not to worship—without fear.
As we commemorate these two days, let remembrance become a call to conscience and action: to reject hatred, uphold human dignity and work for a just peace in which no person or community is left unprotected.

ActionAid Association in West Bengal is helping women come together, take collective action, and build stronger leadership. In Hasnabad, North 24 Parganas, 120 women workers — bidi rollers, garment workers, and home-based workers — met to discuss their constitutional rights, gender inequality, labour rights, and the role of Labour Schools. The meeting helped women connect their daily problems to solutions they can work on together. It built trust, unity, and confidence to lead in their communities. New women leaders are now working to expand Labour Schools and spread awareness, so all workers can claim dignity, rights, and respect.

On World Humanitarian Day, we honour humanitarian workers—and recognise that in every crisis, the community is often the first responder.
Neighbours rescue neighbours, local volunteers organise relief, and community leaders connect vulnerable people with essential support—frequently before formal assistance arrives.
As climate-related emergencies increase in both scale and frequency, building resilience must go beyond infrastructure and preparedness plans. Communities need practical first-responder training in first aid, search and rescue, evacuation, early warning, and emergency coordination.
To help meet this need, ActionAid Association has been organising Humanitarian Action Schools across the country, equipping communities with the knowledge and skills to prepare for emergencies, respond effectively, and lead recovery efforts.
When local people have the skills, resources, and confidence to act, lives are saved and recovery begins sooner. Investing in community first responders is not just preparation for the next crisis—it is essential to building a safer and more resilient future.
