We started this initiative to address the problem of air pollution in our city. Our City is officially the most polluted city in the World.Delhi has held this title for almost 2 years now, although most of us are aware about the situation. We acknowledge it as, '' A Problem'', rather than '' Our Problem'' and act seemingly oblivious. As citizens of a capital city "Right To Clean Air is our preroga
tive, and we are denying ourselves this right. We started this initiative with a simple idea, we thought every home in Delhi has a roof or terrace which is empty and wasted, what if all those concrete roofs were filled with plants & those ugly grey roofs transformed into "Green Roofs". It could address the problem of air pollution, I know it sounds too ambitious and Utopian to imagine an entire city with '' Green Roofs". But just Imagine what if this could be done to even 60-70% of homes in Delhi. There are proven researches on the benefits of Green Roofs. Countries like Germany, Australia & Singapore and some states in US too have recognized the benefits of Green Roofs & are boosting their green infrastructure by promoting, investing and incentivizing Green Roofs. Plants are nature's best air filters and they help in purifying the air by turning carbon dioxide into oxygen they also remove harmful toxins from the environment. In fact there are some indoor plants that help in purifying indoor air by removing pollutants and toxins like ammonia, xylene, benzene & formaldehyde found commonly in households environment. Green Roofs would not only aid in addressing the problem of air pollution and help create fresh air, it would also add to the aesthetic appeal of our homes and our city. The GreenRoofs Project is an initiative of UrbanGardens.in, it aims to increase the green cover of our city by promoting Green Roofs, Organic Terrace & Community Gardening and through massive afforestation drives. We wish to make Delhi a '' City Of Green Roofs" and do away with the dubious title of the most polluted city in the World. We are realistic and practical in our approach we know that making our city greener & cleaner is just one part of the story. Various other measures need to be taken as well like cutting emissions, improving fuel standards etc. We believe if the citizens of Delhi join hands and make this a collective effort, the government too would take concrete steps, rather than just dragging its feet. Over the coming days we will meet people who are into terrace gardening & experts from the field of horticulture and various other related fields. Share their experiences & insights. And come up with a cost effective and sustainable way of "Urban Gardening" in our city. We hope you would support us in this endeavor & help create a "Greener & Cleaner Delhi."
