INaturewatch Foundation

INaturewatch Foundation iNaturewatch Foundation is a charitable trust working in the field of ecorestoration State Department's Alumni Engagement Fund. Isaac Kehimkar, Mr. Mr. Ms.

GENESIS: The iNaturewatch Foundation is an entity emerged from the project supported by U.S. The project- Mobile Apps for Climate Change which was implemented by five Fulbright Fellows namely; Dr. V.Shubhalaxmi, Mr. Ashutosh Richarriya and Dr. Anirban Gupta. The project developed three mobile apps (iButterflies, iTrees and iNaturwatch Birds) and conducted a citizen science project among schools of

Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkatta alongwith their NGO partners- WWF-India and Greenline. The one year project ended in August 2014 and the entity iNaturewatch Foundation was born. The page previously was known as Urban Citizen Scientist. GOAL: Building field-oriented environmentally resilient communities

MISSION: To build capacities of local communities for nature conservation and climate change through citizen science

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Climate change is an ever-growing issue that is seeking more attention in the current times which is only to grow further. However understanding the impact of climate change is still considered to be a technical area where public at large cannot participate. While most of the climate change impacts are studies on ecoregions very less focus has been on urban biodiversity. There is a need to sensitize the urbanites primarily with issues closer to their homes. By providing urbanities with opportunities of contributing to science closer from their homes is empowering. This is where citizen science could be promoted. Citizen science is still in its nascent stage in our country but soon it will progress soon. Additionally by 2050 most of the cities will grow in humungous manner and retaining the balance between natural spaces and resources will become crucial. Thus we intend to work in the climate change domain using citizen science as a model so that we develop environmentally conscious communities. OBJECTIVES
• To conduct public awareness programmes
• To conduct citizen science projects
• To undertake habitat creation and restoration CSR projects
• To collaborate with like-minded institutions
• To develop educational modules on urban biodiversity
• To promote lesser fauna research
4. Activities
• Conduct free nature appreciation walks in Navi Mumbai
• Hold annual Urban iNaturewatch Challenge
• Create and Restore wildlife habitats in urban areas
• Develop entomological projects
• Conduct workshops and camps under Insect Tourism

TARGET GROUP: We intend to reach out to

🦩 Flamingo Watch & Walk – A Morning with Nature! 🌿

We successfully conducted a Flamingo Watch & Walk at the Flamingo Bird Watch Point, Nerul, with 39 enthusiastic participants, including 33 members from Tata Consulting Engineers. The programme offered an opportunity to explore and appreciate the remarkable biodiversity of Navi Mumbai's wetlands, which serve as important habitats for migratory flamingos and numerous other waterbirds.

Although we were unable to witness the spectacular congregation of thousands of flamingos due to unfavourable tide timing, nature compensated us with a variety of fascinating wildlife sightings.

During the walk, participants recorded 26 species of birds, including the Lesser Flamingo, Shikra, Black Kite, Wire-tailed Swallow, Greater Coucal, Asian Koel, Black-winged Stilt, Little Egret, Intermediate Egret, Great Egret, Indian Pond Heron, Striated Heron (Little Heron), White-throated Kingfisher, Rose-ringed Parakeet, House Crow, Large-billed Crow, Common Tailorbird, Ashy Prinia, Plain Prinia, Red-whiskered Bulbul, Red-vented Bulbul, House Sparrow, Yellow-throated Sparrow, Common Myna, Oriental Magpie Robin, and Purple-rumped Sunbird.

The programme evolved beyond a conventional birdwatching outing and became a valuable citizen science initiative, with participants documenting wetland biodiversity through photographs and uploading their observations to the iNaturalist platform. Our group leaders, Dr. Ketki Marthak and Mr. Suraj Das, skillfully transformed the initial disappointment of missing the large flamingo flocks into curiosity and excitement about discovering lesser-known species that inhabit these wetlands.

Nature proved to be an excellent teacher of patience. Fittingly, towards the very end of the walk, a few juvenile flamingos made a welcome appearance, delighting the participants and rewarding their perseverance.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their enthusiasm, curiosity, and active engagement, as well as to our volunteers and interns whose support contributed significantly to the success of the event. Together, we continue to foster awareness, appreciation, and conservation of our invaluable wetland ecosystems.

🌍🌿 Happy World Environment Day 2026 from iNaturewatch Foundation! 🌿🌍

This year's World Environment Day theme, "Climate Action," reminds us that protecting biodiversity and restoring ecosystems are essential steps towards a climate-resilient future.

The butterflies, dragonflies, spiders, and other wildlife featured here have been recorded from our butterfly gardens and conservation projects. While these gardens are designed to support butterflies, they also provide valuable habitat for a wide range of other species, demonstrating how even small green spaces can contribute to biodiversity conservation.

Every native plant added, every habitat restored, and every community member engaged helps create healthier ecosystems for wildlife and people alike.

💚 Small Steps. Big Impact.

This World Environment Day, let us continue taking action for climate, biodiversity, and a greener future.
