Greening Mumbai can begin right where we live.🌿

This Saturday marks the first chapter of , bringing people together to explore practical ways of greening the spaces around us from windowsills and balconies to terraces and shared neighbourhood spaces.

This builds on the journey of this year’s Independence Day Daawat, whose proceeds will support greening efforts across Mumbai, including at Lallubhai Compound in Mankhurd, where YUVA works alongside the community to build climate resilience in a heat-vulnerable neighbourhood.

And the journey continues beyond one event. Make Mumbai Green Again, a platform by The Bombay Canteen, WRI India, RPG Foundation and YUVA, will continue through a series of monthly engagements, creating opportunities for Mumbaikars to understand the city’s greening journey and find meaningful ways to take part.

Join us for the first chapter this Saturday and be part of a greener Mumbai. 🌱

👉 How is climate change being experienced by communities and informal workers across our cities and what can we learn from those responding to these challenges on the ground?

✨ Join the Urban Resilience Collaborative for Informal Sector (URC-IS) for Episode 5 of Collaborative Conversations, bringing together community leaders from Agra, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to share their lived experiences of climate change and its impact on informal workers and communities.

The conversation will highlight local challenges, community-led responses, and the critical role of grassroots leadership in building more climate-resilient and inclusive cities.

The session will be moderated by Roshni Nuggehalli, Executive Director, YUVA, with community representatives from across the URC-IS collaborative.

➡️Nearly 25 years after families were relocated to resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) housing as major infrastructure projects were planned in Mumbai, important questions remain around the maintenance, long-term responsibility and governance of these settlements.

On 20 August, YUVA launched 25 Years Later: Infrastructure Conditions of R&R Housing in Mumbai, bringing together resident representatives from cooperative housing societies and federations, along with practitioners from housing, law, planning and rehabilitation.

🗨️ The discussion underscored that adequate housing cannot be measured only by the allocation of a tenement. The long-term safety of buildings, the quality of common infrastructure, residents’ participation, and clarity over who has the resources and responsibility to maintain these settlements remain central to the future of R&R housing in Mumbai.

👉🏼Yesterday YUVA launched 25 Years Later: Infrastructure Conditions of R&R Housing in Mumbai, an important study that raises questions around the maintenance and governance of resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) buildings. People living in slums were relocated to these buildings as they were displaced by infrastructure projects (flyovers, roads, railways etc). This continues till date and will happen in the future.

Over the past two decades, more than 2 lakh such residential apartments and commercial tenements have been approved by the MMRDA and SRA. However, the existing framework does not clearly define responsibilities for the maintenance of settlement-level infrastructure or provide adequate resources for it.

📖The study findings reveal how these buildings have significantly aged over 20 years, many require major repairs, but co-operative housing societies that manage these buildings have limited resources for maintenance.

Co-operative housing federations have no source of funds and technical capacity making it difficult for them to maintain common infrastructure.

The report calls for a comprehensive policy for the long-term maintenance and operation of R&R housing, clearer responsibilities and financial provisions, structural audits and necessary repairs, and greater support for cooperative housing societies and federations.

Ensuring adequate housing means looking at what happens after resettlement and who remains responsible for the safety, maintenance and governance of these settlements.

🇮🇳 This Independence Day, conversations on freedom took different forms across YUVA’s work.

From reflections on constitutional rights and democracy with workers and youth in Assam, to conversations around child protection in Mumbai and youth-led discussions on leadership, equality and fundamental rights, here are a few glimpses of how the day was marked.

📍 Assam
Our Guwahati and Jorhat teams came together with members of GASS (Grihokarmi Adhikar Suraksha Samiti), a domestic workers’ collective, youth groups and construction workers to reflect on independent India’s journey, constitutional rights and democracy.

📍 Mumbai
Our Child Rights teams held a three-day campaign across Mankhurd, Bandra, Malvani and Kandivali, बच्चों पर होने वाले हर शोषण से आज़ादी। Through Child Protection Committee (CPC) discussions, poster-making, a police station visit, a signature campaign and a street play on “CPC Kya Hai?”, children and community members explored child protection and the role communities play in it.

📍 Western Suburbs, Mumbai
Young women came together for conversations on leadership and safe spaces, followed by a youth-led discussion on the Constitution, fundamental rights and duties, and what equality, freedom and democratic values mean in everyday life.

👉🏼Nearly 25 years after families began being relocated to resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) housing in Mumbai, in what condition are these buildings and neighborhoods in today?

In these buildings, questions around ageing, repairs, basic infrastructure and who takes responsibility for their long-term maintenance .

YUVA’s latest study, ‘25 Years Later: Infrastructure Conditions of R&R Housing in Mumbai’, looks at these questions through 38 cooperative housing societies, 53 buildings and 3 federations.

🤝The study brings together findings on the condition of R&R housing, the challenges faced by residents, co-operative housing societies, federations and what is needed to ensure their long-term maintenance and governance.

On 20 August, we’re launching the report and bringing its findings, recommendations and residents’ experiences into the conversation.

For over four decades, YUVA has worked alongside young people, creating spaces to learn, question, express themselves and participate in shaping their communities.

✨ The next time you pick up a hair clip, a piece of jewellery, a garment or a packaged food item, pause for a moment.

Behind many of these everyday products is the skilled labour of women working from their homes in Mumbai’s bastis. Their work keeps local supply chains moving, yet it often goes unrecognised and undervalued.

👉 “Visibilising Home-Based Work in Mumbai Bastis: An Action Research Report” draws on research from Ambujwadi, Nalasopara and Navi Mumbai to examine the realities of home-based work. It explores long working hours, low piece-rate wages, occupational health concerns, unpaid family labour, and the challenge of balancing paid work with unpaid care responsibilities.

The report also highlights why recognising home-based workers, improving working conditions, and strengthening social protection are essential to building more inclusive and equitable cities.

🌍We convened Climate Samvad with an incredible group of young people living and working in cities at Muskaan - Mitti Ka Ghar in Bhopal.

🤝 We were grateful to be joined by Bart van den Hurk, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II (WGII), Sherine El-Wattar (WGII TSU), and Graces Ching (CLARE Project Coordinator), who spent the morning listening, engaging and reflecting with us as the IPCC prepares its upcoming Special Report on Climate Change and Cities.

💬The youth reflected on why, in the Indian context, adaptation cannot be separated from precarious livelihoods, inadequate housing, gaps in water, sanitation and other basic infrastructure. They discussed how climate science can better recognise informal work, homelessness, tenure insecurity and loss and damage, while also exploring how mitigation pathways can remain equitable in Indian cities where development challenges take precedence.

🌱Youth critically shared how terms such as resilience, maladaptation and individual behaviour change are problematic framings for cities in the developing world. Perhaps for urban youth the strongest hope from the IPCC was the creation of formal spaces for consistent dialogue.

✨A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed their experiences, questions and perspectives, and to the IPCC team for creating the space to listen. We left with new questions, new ideas and a shared commitment to continue this conversation.
