✨ Young people bring their own questions, experiences, ideas and aspirations to the spaces they are part of.

For over four decades, YUVA has worked alongside young people, creating spaces to learn, question, express themselves and participate in shaping their communities.

▶️ One such space is Anubhav Shiksha Kendra’s Youth Leadership Building Course (YLBC), which has brought young people from across Maharashtra together since 1993. Avinash’s journey through YLBC is one among many, showing how the right spaces and opportunities can open up new possibilities.

✨ The next time you pick up a hair clip, a piece of jewellery, a garment or a packaged food item, pause for a moment.

Behind many of these everyday products is the skilled labour of women working from their homes in Mumbai’s bastis. Their work keeps local supply chains moving, yet it often goes unrecognised and undervalued.

👉 “Visibilising Home-Based Work in Mumbai Bastis: An Action Research Report” draws on research from Ambujwadi, Nalasopara and Navi Mumbai to examine the realities of home-based work. It explores long working hours, low piece-rate wages, occupational health concerns, unpaid family labour, and the challenge of balancing paid work with unpaid care responsibilities.

The report also highlights why recognising home-based workers, improving working conditions, and strengthening social protection are essential to building more inclusive and equitable cities.

🌍We convened Climate Samvad with an incredible group of young people living and working in cities at Muskaan - Mitti Ka Ghar in Bhopal.

🤝 We were grateful to be joined by Bart van den Hurk, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II (WGII), Sherine El-Wattar (WGII TSU), and Graces Ching (CLARE Project Coordinator), who spent the morning listening, engaging and reflecting with us as the IPCC prepares its upcoming Special Report on Climate Change and Cities.

💬The youth reflected on why, in the Indian context, adaptation cannot be separated from precarious livelihoods, inadequate housing, gaps in water, sanitation and other basic infrastructure. They discussed how climate science can better recognise informal work, homelessness, tenure insecurity and loss and damage, while also exploring how mitigation pathways can remain equitable in Indian cities where development challenges take precedence.

🌱Youth critically shared how terms such as resilience, maladaptation and individual behaviour change are problematic framings for cities in the developing world. Perhaps for urban youth the strongest hope from the IPCC was the creation of formal spaces for consistent dialogue.

✨A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed their experiences, questions and perspectives, and to the IPCC team for creating the space to listen. We left with new questions, new ideas and a shared commitment to continue this conversation.

🌍Implementing Community Climate Action Plans in Informal Settlements | Launch of YUVA's Community Climate Action Planning (CCAP) Toolkit

Climate change disproportionately affects people living in informal settlements, making locally led and inclusive adaptation planning more important than ever.

✨ At our event, we launched the Community Climate Action Planning (CCAP) Toolkit, a practical resource that supports communities, civil society organisations and local governments in planning and implementing climate adaptation measures.

Drawing on YUVA's experience across multiple informal settlements, the toolkit provides a step-by-step approach to identifying climate vulnerabilities, prioritising adaptation implementation in collaboration with local governments.

👉 At the launch community representatives from Ambojwadi reiterated the need of implementation of priorities co-identified by people’s collective as a part of the CCAP process.

Chief Guest Shri Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management), BMC, who spearheaded BMC’s involvement in CCAP, highlighted the need to integrate informal settlements more meaningfully into climate planning processes, particularly in the City Climate Action Plans. 🌿

Guest speaker Shri Kundan Valvi, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, P North Ward, BMC, highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration between communities and local government.🤝

⚠️ A workplace injury, unpaid wages, unsafe working conditions, harassment, or sudden loss of work—these are not just workplace issues for informal workers. They can affect an entire family's well-being and livelihood.

Yet, many workers are unaware of where to seek help or how to claim their rights.

Since 2012, YUVA's Labour Helpline has been supporting workers by providing information on labour rights, guidance on government schemes and social security, assistance with workplace grievances, and referrals to relevant authorities and services when needed. Through this support, thousands of workers have been able to access information, resolve issues, and strengthen their access to entitlements.

No worker should have to face these challenges alone.

🌿What can a forest, a village, a dam and a fort teach us?

During a youth exposure visit to Melghat, participants explored biodiversity, met residents of a rehabilitated village, learnt about conservation from forest officials, experienced a disaster preparedness demonstration, and discovered the history of Narnala Fort.

The visit encouraged young people to look beyond textbooks and understand how communities, history and the environment are deeply connected.🤝

🤝 When young people come together to learn from one another, they also strengthen the communities they are part of.

🌱 Youth from across Vidarbha came together for a two-day Youth Forum Strengthening Workshop organised by Anubhav Shiksha Kendra, YUVA's youth leadership programme that creates spaces for young people to build leadership, connect with their communities and take collective action.

Through discussions, group activities and shared experiences, participants reflected on strengthening youth forums, reaching more young people, and sustaining youth-led spaces in their districts. The workshop also explored leadership, social security schemes and the role young people can play in addressing local issues.
