We had visitors from the First year BBA Analytics students of the Department of Business Management, St. Joseph's College (Autonomous), Devagiri as part of their social extension program. Community Leader, Jyothi Susan Joseph briefed the students about the various activities and initiatives aimed at empowering the differently-abled people in Ashaniketan. Students visited workshops where the core members showcased their handmade crafts and products. Both the core members and students performed cultural programs, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere. To extend their support, the students contributed a fund and also purchased handmade ornaments, candles, soaps, and handwash products crafted by the talented residents. The visit was a heartwarming and insightful experience that emphasized empathy, compassion, and the importance of community support.
Thanks also to Dr. Christy Abraham and Ms. Anjali Raju for this great initiative.

22nd July 2011 Day 2 Kuala Lumpur - Yangon, Myanmar

Next morning we all went to the Café and had a good breakfast. Appa and Amma got ready to go for the Half day City tour while I went for a quick stroll to Sogo Shopping Mall. Since it was the beginning of Ramadhan, many stores were beginning to offer discount.

I returned to the hotel by 11am and checked out. Walked to the Light Rapid Transport system and took a train to KL Sentral. This is the Central station from where all trains to anywhere in Malaysia can be taken.

I took a ticket for KLIA by KLIA Expres (South Asia’s fastest train) and within 28 min, reached KLIA, voted as the Best Airport in the World 2007. KLIA is huge although I haven’t seen Dublin T2, London and Dubai. But if you take KLIA with 40 aero bridges and 40 for KL LCCT, I think it should rank in the top 10 airports.

MAI Aviation counter was open and I checked in. The flight was relatively empty. Hence they gave me a window seat. The flight from KL to Yangon takes 2 ½ hours. It is a full service airline. On board, we were greeted with a cold towel and newspapers. The seats were large and comfortable. The meal was also sumptuous and very tasty. I had Chicken with Noodles, prawns, chicken in Barbecue sauce, salad with braised chicken and a tasty cake with ample portions of condensed milk poured on it.

Reached Yangon International Airport by 3pm. After immigration formalities, I went out and was greeted by the Hotel Sedona (5 Star) driver. The drive to the hotel took around 20 minutes. Hotel Sedona is a lovely hotel with the beautiful Inya lake in front of it. The pictures say it all. I was greeted with a British Council folder with instructions to join the Director and Presenters for dinner at 8pm.

After freshening up, I ran to a shopping area nearby. It was raining and luckily I had brought an umbrella. The dinner at the Executive Club, 11th floor was great with a lot of Myanmar cuisine.

Our Story

Asha Niketan Nandi Bazar is affiliated with L’Arche International, a worldwide organization that supports communities of people with and without learning disabilities who share life together. “Asha Niketan” means “House of Hope.” This is a direct connection to L’Arche’s mission to be a sign of hope in the world, welcoming and celebrating the unique gifts of every person.

Founded in 1977, the Asha Niketan Nandi Bazar community is located in a small village on the coast of Kerala, India. The community is comprised of over 70 persons, providing just working conditions, spiritual nourishment, and meaningful relationships to all.

The community’s way of life is rich in prayer, hard work, and relationship. Three residential homes and three vocational programmes are maintained on the community’s ten acres of land. Residential members share everyday life together, and are joined during the week by non-residential members to participate in programmes. Daily life is often busy and full, but a commitment to spirituality centers all on a common attitude of equality, peace, and love.

Visitors, donors, and volunteers come to Asha Niketan to share time with the community, often for special events, major festivals, and birthday celebrations — these occasions bring joy to the community and help connect members to life outside AN Nandi.
