🌿 Empowering Mountain Communities through Entrepreneurship 🌿

In the serene landscapes of Gram Ghattu Dhar, Meldhar Gram Sabha (Block Bironkhal, District Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand), CHINAR continues its commitment towards sustainable mountain livelihoods.

With support from the Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology, we successfully organized and conducted three Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) training workshops at a local micro food processing unit.

Despite the challenges posed by difficult terrain and scattered populations, the initiative has reached 32 participants (17 men & 15 women) including youth, farmers, and women from Self Help Groups.

🔍 Key highlights of the training:
• Hands-on experience with modern food processing machinery
• Awareness on mountain-based agro-entrepreneurship opportunities
• Insights into backward & forward market linkages
• Exposure to integrated models – kiwi orchards, polyhouse vegetable cultivation, and advanced food processing & packaging techniques

This initiative is a step forward in nurturing self-reliant rural entrepreneurship and building resilient livelihoods in the Himalayan region.

Together, we are transforming challenges into opportunities right from the roots of our mountains. 🌄

Gender Empowerment through Skill Development

In many marginalized mountain communities, families are compelled to spend a significant portion of their limited income on tailoring—especially for daily wear and children’s school uniforms. Addressing this challenge through skill development can create lasting social and economic impact.

CHINAR is currently conducting a one-month tailoring training program for women, including youth, in the village of Sama. The training focuses on stitching a range of garments, particularly traditional attire and everyday clothing. Beyond reducing household expenses, the initiative contributes to the revival of local culture by strengthening traditional clothing practices.

After just over two weeks of training, participants are already able to stitch different types of clothes independently, as reflected in the progress captured in the photographs. This growing confidence and competence opens pathways for livelihood enhancement, with some participants choosing to take up tailoring as an income-generating activity.

Empowering women with practical skills not only strengthens household resilience but also fosters dignity, self-reliance, and community-led development in fragile mountain ecosystems.

Spreading Warmth, Inspiring Learning in Tehri Garhwal

On 31 December 2025, CHINAR, with the generous support of its donors, extended a meaningful gesture of care to young learners at JMPS Devanghansi, a government primary school in Jaunpur Thathyur block of Tehri Garhwal. Warm sweaters and caps were distributed to 60 primary students, helping them stay protected during the harsh winter months.

This simple yet impactful support is expected to improve student attendance, boost confidence, and create a more comfortable learning environment for children. When basic needs are met, students are better able to focus on their studies and actively participate in school activities.

Initiatives like this demonstrate how community-driven support can strengthen government schools and set inspiring examples for other schools across the region and the state. The Head Master and teachers of JMPS Devanghansi expressed their heartfelt gratitude to CHINAR for its generosity and continued commitment to children’s education and well-being.
