What if your walls could breathe? 🌿

Mud plaster is more than a beautiful, earthy finish. When made and applied correctly, it can help regulate indoor humidity, soften the feel of a space, and bring natural texture and warmth to the walls.

No synthetic finish. No need to hide the material.

Just earth, carefully mixed, tested and applied.

At Geeli Mitti, we believe natural building is not about going back in time. It’s about understanding materials deeply enough to use them intelligently today.

Would you choose a mud plaster finish for your home?

Good architecture doesn’t fight nature. It works with it. ☀️

Light isn’t something that simply enters a home through a window. In thoughtful architecture, it is something we design for, anticipate and invite in.

The direction of the sun, the size and placement of windows, the depth of walls, the changing seasons — all of these can shape how light moves through a space.

And in a mud home, these relationships become even more tangible. The earth, the openings and the sunlight work together to create spaces that feel connected to the world outside.

Because perhaps real architecture isn’t about shutting nature out.

It’s about knowing how to live with it. 🌿

What’s one natural element you would design your home around — light, wind, water or earth?

What makes one clay plaster crack while another stays strong?

It isn’t just about the ingredients—it’s about how they interact.

In these 5 clay plaster samples, we experimented with different combinations of clay, sand, bentonite, China clay, dolomite and cow dung to understand how each ingredient affects shrinkage, strength, cohesion and cracking.

The chemistry of clay plaster is fascinating: the clay binds, sand provides a mineral skeleton, and organic fibres can help reinforce the mix. But get the proportions wrong, and the same ingredients can behave very differently.

This is the science behind earthen plaster and natural building—understanding materials rather than simply following a recipe.

Want us to break down the chemistry behind each sample? Tell us in the comments.

“Won’t a mud house just wash away in the rain?” 🌧️

One of the biggest myths about mud homes is that they can’t handle water.

The truth? A well-designed mud home can handle rain beautifully.

Think of it as giving your home good boots and a good hat:

👣 Good boots — a strong foundation and a well-built plinth keep the walls protected from ground moisture and splashing rain.

🏠 A good hat — generous roof overhangs keep rain away from the walls.

And when these basics are done right, mud walls have another beautiful quality: they can breathe.

Unlike many impermeable materials, earth can help regulate indoor humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture as conditions change — helping create a more comfortable indoor environment.

So no, a mud home isn’t simply waiting to melt in the rain.
Build it right, and the rain can be part of the rhythm of the home. 🌿

What other myths about mud homes should we bust next? Tell us in the comments.

What if your walls could do more than just look beautiful? 🌿

Clay plaster is naturally porous and hygroscopic — it can regulate indoor humidity and, under certain conditions, adsorb some airborne pollutants. The result? A more balanced and potentially healthier indoor environment, without adding another machine to your home.

Sometimes, the materials we build with matter just as much as what we put inside our homes.

Curious about what goes into a good clay plaster mix?

Comment “MIX” and we’ll share what’s inside our clay plaster samples. 👇

No tiles. No grout. Just lime, water & craftsmanship.

This beautiful bathroom at Geeli Mitti is finished in Tadelakt — a traditional lime plaster technique that creates a smooth, seamless, water-resistant surface.

There’s something special about natural materials when they’re allowed to be beautiful and functional.

Soft curves. Hand-finished surfaces. The texture of lime. And a shower that turns the whole space into a little sanctuary.

Natural building doesn’t have to mean compromising on beauty. It can be the beauty. 🌿

Would you build a bathroom like this? Tell us in the comments.

Want to build a mud home? Here’s where you begin. 🌱

Building with earth isn’t just about putting up walls. It’s about understanding the material, learning the process, and becoming part of the making.

1. Observe & understand
Start by observing mud homes. Understand what they’re made of, how they respond to climate, and why they work.

2. Learn the whole building
Go beyond the walls. Learn about the foundation, plinth, walls, roof, septic system, rainwater harvesting and all the other systems that make a home work.

3. Build a model
Before building at full scale, learn to build a model of your home. It helps you understand proportions, details, materials and the process of construction.

4. Build with people
Hire skilled people where you need them, but stay involved in the building yourself. Learn, participate and lean on your community for support.

5. Have fun.
Because the joy of building becomes the joy of living in it. And perhaps that’s one of the most beautiful things about building your own home.

What if your imagination could shape your home? 🌿

This little Hobbit-like home sits at the Geeli Mitti campus — built with earth, shaped by hand, and designed with the possibility that a home doesn’t have to look like every other home.

At Geeli Mitti, we explore what becomes possible when we build with natural materials and learn to work with the earth rather than against it.

Because building a home can be more than construction.
It can be an act of making, learning, experimenting — and having a lot of fun along the way.

And yes, you can learn how to build one too. 🌱
