Apatani shaman perfoming ropi ritual 1978.

This Apatani shaman is conducting a ritual known as ropi. Holding his machete in one hand and a bamboo bow in the other, he is chanting to the skin of a jungle cat stretched out on a pole in front of him. Behind it is the Apatani ritual hut. This ritual is performed in order to prevent retaliation by the soul of one’s dead enemy and his ancestors. In the past, the hand of the killed enemy was brought to the ritual hut where it was burned. Today, and in the past, it is also performed when certain animals are killed, particularly a jungle cat. Apatanis believe that, in the world of ancestors and spirits, this animal is closely allied to humans. As with humans, the ritual is intended to prevent retaliation by the animal’s soul and ancestors. (1978)

Betty von Furer-Haimendorf and Apatanis 1944.

Betty von Furer-Haimendorf sits among a crowd of curious Apatanis on the first day of her arrival in the Apatani valley, with her husband, Christoph. She holds Chunki, the black cat that she and her husband took with them on their extensive travels in this then-isolated region. The man on the right is Koj Karu, one of the Apatani men who had accompanied and guided Betty and Christoph from Assam to the valley.
