A young woman, 27 years old, ran away from home for her passion. She wanted to serve the society and make a positive difference in the world. Her vision is now manifested as the Anugraha Trust for the Handicapped. left home in May 1985 to join the Vivekananda Kendra. She began her 6 months spiritual training program, followed by 3 months of yoga therapy. Being a trained occupational therapist, she
combined the techniques of yoga in her therapy for children with polio and cerebral palsy, making tremendous improvements in their mobility. She continued with this work for 5 years. She met her future husband, Mr. Balasubramaniam in the Kendra itself. Both had come there to understand the meaning of life and their own purpose in it. They shared the same passion and it brought them together. They got married in 1989, but unfortunately had to leave the Kendra, since it was against the Kendra's policy to marry a co-worker. In the beginning of their married life they had to earn a living for their survival. Geeta started doing house visits to give occupational therapy to the disabled, while Mr. Balasubramaniam started working for a travel agency. During one of her numerous visits. Geeta met Mr. Ananthakrishnan. Geeta was giving him therapy and the two discussed various ideas to help improve the lives of the disabled. Mr. Ananthakrishnan was an educationist and had already established a polytechnique. Geeta impressed upon him the need for helping the disabled on a larger scale. She convinced him that the number of people that could be potentially reached through a school, was significantly higher than the number of disabled reached during house visits. Thus the idea to start the Anugraha Trust for the Handicapped was born. The idea turned into action with dedicated hard work, sheer grit and determination, hope and God's grace. What stands today is a school for the
physically disabled and mentally re****ed, on its own land and run in its own building. The school is mainly run on the goodwill of well wishers. You can be a part of this movement by contributing generously towards the school.
