A Woman’s Journey — An Awakening of a Community

Vedhavalli who stepped beyond the boundaries society had placed before women. She stood with and for fisherwomen, children, fisher peoples, the coast, and the commons, turning every struggle she witnessed into a call for justice.

Through her courage and leadership, she brought women together, encouraged them to understand their rights, raise their voices, and participate in decisions affecting their families and community. Her journey was not only a struggle for change, it became an awakening of the community.

Her voice may have fallen silent, but her courage still echoes along the coast of Karaikal and beyond.

Vedhavalli is not merely a memory.
She is the voice of a society.
She is the awakening of a community.
She is the courage of the fisher peoples.
She is a legacy for generations to carry forward.

Awareness Programme on BIS Standards!

"Know the standards, check the quality, protect your family"

On 20th and 25th August, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organised the BIS SHINE (Standards Help Inform & Nurture Empowered Women) awareness programme in Karaikal. Sangam members from Karaikalmedu and Kilinjalmedu actively participated in the programme.

The programme was presided over by Mr. Thirumurugan, District President, Fedkat India – Consumer Club, and Mr. Sivakumar, Secretary, Coalition of Consumer Unions. Federation leaders Sumathi, Thilagavathy, Selvi, Jayanthi, and other members also participated.

Dr. Jothi, Trainer, Coalition of Consumer Unions, facilitated an informative session on BIS standards and consumer awareness.

The session focused on:
* Identifying adulterated food products
* Understanding the importance of the BIS Care App
* Recognising the ISI mark and BIS standards
* Checking quality and safety standards on different products

The programme also included a practical demonstration, enabling participants to apply their learning and identify quality and standard marks on various consumer products.

Around 100 Sangam members participated in the programme and gained valuable knowledge to make informed, safe, and responsible consumer choices.

Empowered women are informed consumers and informed consumers build safer communities!

Broadening Social Security for Elders: A Joint Effort of Fisher Women’s Federation and Traditional Fisher Panchayats:

Ageing with dignity is a right; collective action can turn that right into reality!

The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment provides social support to senior citizens aged 60 and above, particularly those from economically vulnerable communities, including assistive equipment such as tricycles, walking sticks and other essential aids.

From community solidarity to social security, every elder deserves a life of dignity and respect!

To strengthen access to these entitlements, SNEHA, together with the Karaikal District Fisher Women Federation (KDFWF) and Fisher Panchayats, conducted a survey across six coastal villages to identify eligible senior citizens. The teams then supported the identified beneficiaries throughout the application process during February and March 2026.

As a result of this collective effort, more than 150 senior citizens have received assistive equipment worth approximately ₹6 lakh.

This initiative demonstrates the power of community-led action and collective responsibility in ensuring that social protection reaches those who need it most.

For senior citizens, these simple but essential aids can mean greater mobility, independence and dignity in everyday life.

SNEHA continues to advocate for a dignified, respectful and independent life for senior citizens, because ageing with dignity is a right, not a privilege.

Changing the Discourse | Karaikal District Fisherwomen Federation Meeting

On 22 July 2026, the Karaikal District Fisherwomen Federation convened its district-level meeting under the leadership of Federation President Mrs. G. Sumathi.

A key milestone of the meeting was the unanimous election of Mrs. M. Thilagavathi as the District Secretary of the Federation, reflecting the confidence and collective trust placed in her leadership.

Members reviewed the Federation's economic initiatives, discussed the functioning of the Village Coordination Sangams, and reflected on ongoing efforts to strengthen community-led development and collective action.

The meeting was enriched by the presence of Ms. Subashini, Development Officer, State Bank of India (SBI) and President of Thanga Pengal (Golden Women). She shared information about employment opportunities at a newly opening SBI branch and encouraged educated women from the community to apply and build meaningful careers.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening women's leadership, enhancing sustainable livelihoods, and advancing the rights, dignity, and well-being of fishing communities through collective action.

Every answer shared is a window into a girl's world!

🌱 Understanding Adolescent Girls: The Seed of Change - Our space, our development

As part of SNEHA's "Our Space, Our Development" programme, we conducted a Baseline Assessment with a small cohort of 170 adolescent girls from 9 coastal villages and 2 schools before launching the 2026–27 sessions.

Through age-appropriate tools and interactive conversations, we explored their knowledge, life skills, decision-making abilities, awareness of child rights, gender equality, safety, and physical and mental well-being. More importantly, the assessment created a platform for the girls to share their voices, experiences, and aspirations.

The insights gathered will guide us in designing meaningful, need-based netball and life skills sessions that foster confidence, leadership, resilience, and holistic development.

Every voice heard today becomes the foundation for a stronger tomorrow. 💙

Today, we remember Comrade P. Christy, the visionary founder of SNEHA, whose life was dedicated to justice, equality, and the empowerment of coastal communities.

His dream was not only to uplift lives but to inspire people to stand with dignity, lead with compassion, and create lasting change. Though he is no longer with us, his ideals continue to guide our work, and his vision lives on in every community we serve.

Eleven children from Kilinjalmedu and Karaikal Medu were honoured by District Collector Ms. Ichita Rathi, IAS, during the "District Collector Reaches the People" programme held at Kottucherry Singaravel Pillai Hall.

Celebrating Young Readers & Responsible Digital Habits 🌱

The children were recognised for their enthusiastic participation in the Summer Learning Programme, where they cultivated a love for reading through the summer library and embraced healthy digital habits by voluntarily staying away from mobile phones for three hours each day.

The awards and gifts were presented by the District Collector in the presence of government officials, representatives from Mission Shakti and Childline, under the guidance of Ms. Krishnaveni, Officer, Department of Women and Child Development.

The programme was also attended by the President and members of the Karaikal District Fisherwomen's Federation. On the occasion, representatives of the Akkampettai Village Coordination Committee submitted a petition requesting the renovation of their village Anganwadi Centre.

Comrade P. Christy, the founder of SNEHA, envisioned a just and equitable society where educated fisher youth become leaders of social and economic transformation within their communities. Today, that vision has taken shape through the Christy Neythal Learning Centre: a dedicated space that supports fisher youth in preparing for competitive examinations through quality coaching, in-person mentoring, career guidance, and psychosocial support.

We are delighted to share that on 1st July 2026, the Christy Neythal Learning Centre officially launched its first-ever coaching programme for competitive examination aspirants at Karaikalmedu Fishing Village, with the support of the Karaikal District Fisher Panchayat Representatives and the Karaikal District Fisherwomen's Federation.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Parasuraman, Secretary to the District Collector, and Mr. Sakthidasan, Tahsildar, who graced the occasion as Chief Guests. Ms. Jesu Rethinam, Director of SNEHA, joined as the Special Guest and delivered the keynote address.

More than 50 aspiring youth participated in the inaugural programme, marking the beginning of a new journey towards educational excellence and meaningful careers.
The distinguished guests encouraged the participants to pursue government employment and leadership opportunities, emphasizing that educated youth can play a vital role in strengthening & uplifting communities. They also expressed their hope that this initiative will continue to grow & benefit many generations to come.
The coaching programme will be led by dedicated trainers Mr.Saran & Mr.Soundaryan, who will provide continuous guidance, mentoring & academic support throughout the journey.

Every Child Deserves a joyful Childhood, Not Child Labour. Say Yes to Education!

On 6 June 2026, SNEHA organized an awareness rally against child labour in Madathukuppam Village, Mayiladuthurai District. The rally witnessed the enthusiastic participation of 115 community members, including Panchayat representatives, women, children, and adolescent girls.

The programme was inaugurated by Ms. Dhanalakshmi, Head of the Child Rights Department, SNEHA. In her address, she emphasized the harmful effects of child labour, the importance of education, children's rights, and the collective responsibility to ensure that every child enjoys a safe, secure, and happy childhood free from exploitation.

During the rally, participants raised powerful slogans advocating for children's rights and education, including:

🚫 “Do Not Engage Children in Labour”
👧 “Every Child Deserves a Childhood, Not Child Labour”

Panchayat representatives reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that children attend school regularly and are protected from all forms of child labour. 🌍 World Day Against Child Labour – Awareness Programme at Akkampettai Beach
On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, more than 60 children from 9 fishing villages across Karaikal District gathered at Akkampettai Beach to raise awareness about children's rights and the importance of education.

The programme began with an interactive session led by Cluster Coordinator Mr. Prakash. A special highlight was the sharing of personal experiences by Mr. Ravichandran and Mrs. Anusiya from Kilinjalmedu village. They spoke about the educational opportunities they missed during childhood due to work and the challenges they later faced in life. Their stories inspired children to value education and pursue their dreams.

The event was further enriched by the participation of Ms. Sumathi, President of the Karaikal District Fisherwomen Federation, Ms. Jayanthi (Advisor), Ms. Jayakanthi (Executive Committee Member), and Ms. Amulu Indira Gandhi, VCS Leader of Akkampettai. They encouraged children to continue their education, develop life skills, and build a brighter future.

Children also expressed their commitment to ending child labour by creating and displaying awareness slogans. The programme concluded with a collective pledge to support a child labour-free society.
