Some bonds are not broken by death. They simply become invisible.

Grief changes the way we see the ordinary. A familiar place, a photograph, a song, or a name can suddenly bring back everything we thought we had learned to live without.

In this week's Whispers Between the Lines, Dr Janatha Ramanathan reflects on the sudden loss of a beloved younger brother, and on grief, memory, love, and the quiet strength of those who stay beside us when words are no longer enough.

Handwriting is still considered as one of the first proofs of a well raised child. A neat notebook, a certificate for good penmanship, a teacher's quiet nod of approval at the gate.

Our recent article focuses on a question worth asking harder than we usually do: why schools keep drilling cursive and penmanship well past the age when it actually helps a child learn to read and write, while typing, the one skill she will use every single day of her adult life, gets a single computer lab hour a week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JOHANNA DEVADAYAVU!

Today, we celebrate our dearest Johanna Devadayavu, a Swiss-born poet, author, humanitarian, and a beloved member of the Writers Capital International Foundation family. For more than four decades, she has made South India her home, dedicating her life to service, peace, compassion, and the belief that humanity can live beyond the divisions that separate us.

Together with her late husband, Lawrie Devadayavu, Johanna founded the Laharinagar Charitable Trust, creating a space where people, animals, and nature coexist in harmony. Her life has remained a quiet yet powerful expression of her faith in universal equality, spiritual harmony, and love for all living beings.

As a poet, her works, including The Call of the Turtledove for Universal Peace and Flight of a Turtledove, carry her enduring message of peace, unity, and the sacred bond between humanity and nature.

For the Writers Capital International Foundation, Johanna is much more than a valued colleague. As our Chief Operations Officer, she has been an essential part of our journey, offering her commitment, wisdom, compassion, and wholehearted support to the Foundation and its many global initiatives. Her presence continues to enrich our work and strengthen the bonds that hold our international family together.

Warm birthday wishes, dear Johanna! May your days ahead be filled with peace, love, good health, and the same boundless compassion that you have so generously shared with the world.

Sometimes, all a person needs is not an answer, but the feeling that someone has noticed.

In this week's edition of Whispers Between the Lines, Dr Janatha Ramanathan reflects on kindness, friendship, compassion, and the quiet ways in which we become a source of strength for one another.

A kind word, a patient conversation, a reassuring presence, or simply the decision to pause instead of walking away can remain with us far longer than we realise.

"Never get married," he told her.

Those words came from a man who had married twice, and was, by every visible account, genuinely happy in his second marriage with his wife and children.

He gave that advice freely, perhaps without even noticing the contradiction sitting inside his own life while he gave it.

Our latest piece is about exactly this. After two honest articles on why Indian marriages struggle, this one asks a different question: is marriage really the enemy, or are we just terrible at preparing anyone for it?
