Dr Sachin Kumar moderated the discussion on demand side management for Green Urea during the event ‘Green Urea: Economic and Environmental Benefits of Low-Carbon Future’ organised by International Forum for Environment, Sustainability & Technology (iFOREST), on July 30, 2024. Since the days of Green Revolution (1960s), in response to India’s low agricultural productivity and need to import food, the country has relied on Urea to provide the nitrogen necessary for higher crop yield and food security. But this reliance has come at a cost to the economy and environment. Accordingly, the discussion focused on overuse/misuse of urea and its impact on health, ecology, and climate - soil sickness, water pollution, GHG emissions and ozone layer depletion. The panelists highlighted the strategies to optimise urea usage, enhance nitrogen use efficiency, increase uptake of viable alternative nitrogenous fertilizers, and opportunities and challenges of non-chemical farming.

The National Critical Minerals Mission aims to establish a robust supply chain for 30 identified critical minerals, supporting India's economic growth, climate action, and sustainable development.

Critical minerals are essential for clean energy technologies. As we transition to a net-zero economy, the demand for these materials will soar, making securing their supply and availability crucial.

The mission will take a comprehensive approach to support domestic production, recycling critical minerals, and overseas acquisition of assets. It will also include technology development, creation of a skilled workforce, extended producer responsibility framework, and suitable financing mechanism.

The exemption and reduction of import duties on critical minerals is a welcome move, as it will help develop the domestic value chain and improve our global competitiveness.

We congratulate the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, on this significant development.

The urgency of climate action necessitates effective strategies and a clear understanding of outcomes along the impact pathway. Shakti launched a capacity-building initiative for CSOs focused on climate action, aiming to foster a shared understanding and equip them with the skills to define strategies, map results, and establish feedback loops that guide future strategies. This initiative was undertaken to align efforts in mapping and measuring progress toward a cleaner future. Since April 2024, we have engaged with approximately 35 organisations through workshops and discussions to align our thinking with their expectations on results-based approaches. The workshops concluded on July 19, 2024.

Stay tuned for further updates!

“Battery circularity and sustainable supply chain are the keys to making EVs truly clean and affordable. This requires a whole bunch of stakeholders including manufacturers, policy makers, recyclers, end-users, etc., to come together and work towards a common goal. A neutral body like Battery 360 alliance will provide the required platform for understanding the unique role that each stakeholder plays, understanding the challenges faced by each of them and help aligning all stakeholders to achieve circular economy for batteries,” said Trupti Deshpande, Senior Programme Manager, Electric Mobility Initiative, Shakti, in a panel discussion on ‘Policy and Implementation Frameworks for Battery Circularity’ at a ‘Launch of Battery360’ organised by WRI India on July 22, 2024, in New Delhi.

Shakti organised a Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on ‘Establishing Embodied Carbon Database for Indian Construction Materials’, in collaboration with Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE), CRDF, CEPT University, and Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) on July 18, 2024, in New Delhi.

This first-of-its-kind initiative aimed to bring together key stakeholders of the building industry to share the results of various technical studies carried out in the last two years in developing a database and framework for calculating the embodied carbon of major building construction materials.

Dr Shailesh Agrawal from BMTPC highlighted the initiatives undertaken by BMTPC towards innovative and green technologies and building materials for faster and quality construction of houses suitable for various geo-climatic zones of the country. Experts, including Professor Rajan Rawal from CEPT University(CARBSE), Dr Sameer Maithel, Independent Clean Energy & Sustainability Practitioner, and Saswati Chetia from Greentech Knowledge Solutions Pvt. Ltd., shared the global policy scenarios and databases available for regulating and reporting embodied carbon, along with policy initiatives shaping up in the Indian ecosystem.

The inconsistencies in expressing results on energy composition, differences in system boundaries, analytical methods, geographical locations, data source and quality underscored the need for an India-specific Embodied Carbon database for construction material and formalisation of its reporting framework. The workshop opened the platform to discuss the means and methods to advance this work and ensure scientific accuracy and market adoption.

“Addressing air pollution requires an urgent call for action, particularly through pathways for decarbonisation like clean transportation. Uttar Pradesh has made significant strides in combating air pollution with the adoption of EVs under State EV Policies and Smart City Missions, demonstrating the potential for replication and scaling up for other regions. Integrating Low-Emission Zones (LEZs) into urban and transport planning can play a crucial role in this regard. Cities worldwide are successfully implementing LEZs, showing benefits beyond improved air quality, including reduced traffic congestion and enhanced public health. By integrating EV adoption with LEZs, we can harness the full potential of clean transportation. However, challenges in implementing LEZs in India must be addressed by mandating EVs at the sub-national level, undertaking demand aggregation of electrification of public fleet and charging infrastructure, as well as enabling freight electrification – in this regard, by following by 3Is, i.e., Inform, Intervene, Incentivise,” said Rishabh Sethi, Programme Manager, Electric Mobility Initiative, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, while delivering industry expert insights on ‘Fostering Transportation Electrification Through the Development of Low-Emission Zones’ during the stakeholder workshop on 'Electrifying Transport in Varanasi: A Workshop on EV Demand and Charging Network', organised by Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) in collaboration with Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) and EY LLP (EY LLP), supported by Asian Development Bank (ADB) on July 9, 2024, at Rudraksh International Cooperation & Convention Centre, Varanasi.

“India’s potential to be a global leader in the EV ecosystem can be achieved by focusing on local manufacturing of essential components especially advanced cell chemistry (ACC) battery systems. This can be facilitated through government-industry collaboration by aligning the industry capabilities with the government policies, thereby, fostering innovation, investment, and infrastructure development; this has been evident from the initiatives like the PLI scheme and the Make in India campaign, which aim to support the ecosystem’s growth. With the exponential growth for EV adoption anticipated for 2030, India’s readiness to cater to the same is faced with various obstacles and requires the need to address several factors. While battery manufacturing requires sophisticated expertise, it is majorly met through global partnerships, necessitating domestic development for self-reliance. Additionally, acquiring the necessary technology and raw materials for battery manufacturing remains challenging, influenced by global geopolitics that impact supply chains and international partnerships. The scarcity and complex processing of battery minerals require a unified approach among stakeholders. Strategic consultations addressing these issues can solidify India's position in the global EV market,” said Rishabh Sethi, Programme Manager, Electric Mobility Initiative, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation while concluding and summarising the discussions that took place during the industrial consultation on ‘Indian EVs & Battery Gigafactories: Imperatives for a Robust Supply Chain’ organised by Customized Energy Solutions (CES) and India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) during India Energy Storage Week (IESW) on July 2, 2024, at Yashobhoomi - India International Convention and Expo Center (IICC), Dwarka, New Delhi.
