Some days, democracy looks less like a lecture and more like a bunch of young people asking uncomfortable questions, laughing, arguing, and telling it like it is.

We had rap, a powerwalk that got way too real, and a panel with young people from Premankur, Parcham, CPD and HALWA sharing what they’re actually doing on the ground.

Premankur Foundation spoke about Grow Café. Parcham got into the everyday struggle for open spaces where girls can actually play. Center for Promoting Democracy - CPD unpacked how class shows up even on a playground, through their experience with the Samvidhan Premier League. And HALWA spoke about girls stepping onto the football field, being underestimated because they’re young, and pushing back anyway.

No big speeches. Just real stories, sharp questions, a few uncomfortable truths, and a lot of fun.

Turns out, democracy is pretty lively when young people get to talk about the things they actually live.

इस Democracy Day week में हम अपनी हफ़्ते भर की मुहिम को आगे बढ़ा रहे हैं। दूसरे दिन मिलते हैं, साथ बैठेंगे, बात करेंगे और लोकतंत्र को थोड़ा और करीब से समझेंगे।

For us at Parcham, “Khelne Chalogi?” has always been more than a question about football.

It’s about what becomes possible whenu girls have the time, space and freedom to simply play.

From Mumbra to Bengaluru, Shivangi, Bushra and Laika took that space, travelling, competing, making friends, and discovering new possibilities along the way.

This film captures a little part of that journey, and the girls who make it what it is.

We started with playgrounds. Then came bigger questions about our city.

The adolescents and very young adolescents of Parcham visited Mumbra’s Sewage Treatment Plant to understand what happens to wastewater from our homes and industries, how it is treated, where it goes, and how treated water is reused.

The invisible side of a city matters too: sewage, waste, drainage, water reuse, and the systems behind them.

The visit was about looking beyond what we see, understanding how Mumbra works, and asking questions about how it is being run.

Young people deserve to understand their city, and have a say in shaping it.

A big thank you to Thane Municipal Corporation Thane Municipal Corporation for facilitating the visit and helping the young people understand the process up close.

This Independence Day, we’re announcing the winners of Mumbra Change Makers. 🇮🇳

Two ideas. Two very different approaches. One shared belief: if you live with a problem, you can also be part of solving it.

We keep talking about the problems in our cities as if someone else is supposed to fix them.

But young people live with these problems too. They see the plastic piling up, the gaps in access to opportunities, the things that slowly become “normal” because nobody has found a better way yet.

That’s why these ideas matter. 🌱

Mr. Ziaur Rehman is using AI and spoken English to help young people become more confident, independent learners.

Urooj Youth Collective, Laika, Mariyam, Roshan, Saeed and Aman are working towards a more plastic-conscious Mumbra by taking the conversation into schools and communities and promoting reusable alternatives.

Sustainability, to us, isn’t just about the environment. It’s about creating solutions that can last, be owned by the community, and continue beyond a project or a grant.

Young people don’t need to wait until they have all the answers.

They need the space, support and trust to try. And sometimes, that’s where change actually begins. ✊🏽

This Independence Day, we’re celebrating young people who chose to do something about the place they call home.
