It focuses on the rights and needs of homeless young women and LBTQ+ youth. Number: +91 7045731582 at https://www.urjatrust.org/donate-us/ Adolescence represents an inner emotional upheaval, a struggle between the eternal wish to cling to the past and the equally powerful wish to get on with the future. That is probably why it is considered as the most difficult period in an indi
vidual development cycle. Within this age group, according to many scientific studies, many young girls and women are or end up being homeless. Homeless adolescent girls and young women are essentially the “poorest of the poor” and the most affected as they are easy targets for exploitation. Field experiences have shown that almost 70% of the girls who leave their homes are forced by their families to do so whereas the remaining 30% leave their homes themselves. But it is important to understand that in both the situations, it is due to their dysfunctional families, difficult circumstances, abuse, and exploitation they have to face that the girls are forced to leave their homes. Often these women and young girls are coerced into s*x trade, beggary and several exploitative livelihood conditions, which place them at a high risk of violence, s*xual exploitation, abuse and assault. Previous studies have also shown us that there are significant instances of mental illness among homeless girls and women. Some of the team members associated with this project, who have been working with these issues since the last 7 to 12 years, have understood that there is no one single reason for them landing up on the streets. But the fact remains that there is no willingness in the system and almost negligible facilities provided by the state authorities or civil society for this disadvantaged, marginalized and vulnerable group. The uniqueness of the target population, the vacuum that currently exists in terms of support for them by the State and civil society and the humane instinct to help the marginalised sections of society forms the basis of this organization.
