Apne Aap Women’s Collective (AAWC) serves the women and children of Mumbai's Kamathipura area, one of the largest and oldest red light areas in Asia.

Founded in 1998, Apne Aap Women’s Collective (AAWC) is an anti-trafficking organisation that serves the women and children of Kamathipura, one of the largest and oldest red light areas in Asia. We operate three programs: Umeed for women in brothel-based prostitution (ages 18+), Udaan for girls (ages 5-18), and Umang for toddlers (ages 2.5-5). As of March 2016, we have served more than 3,000 women

and children. Our alumni have earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees and entered respected professions like accounting, beauty, business process outsourcing, dance, hospitality management, luxury cuisine, medical compounding, nursing, photography, retail, social work, and teaching. Post office account opening camps were held at the centres, providing Umeed beneficiaries with the opportunity to open saving accounts. This initiative allows them to save money and access various online services and schemes. Beneficiaries received assistance with online transactions, KYC updates, card activation, and other essential banking services. A step forward in empowering them financially. 💡

As we reflect on an incredible year, we’re proud to share the continued impact of our mission at Apne Aap Women's Collective (AAWC). From supporting 2279 women through the Umeed program to providing holistic services to 148 young girls through Udaan, we’re committed to breaking the intergenerational cycle of trafficking and empowering women to lead dignified lives.

This year, we were honored with the Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar Samman for our dedication to women's empowerment. With your continued support, we’re making lasting change.

We are pleased to share our June 2025 Newsletter, bringing you updates from our Umeed and Udaan programs.

This newsletter features a new vocational training initiative, salon training under the Umeed program, in partnership with the SBI Foundation's Sashakti vertical, which helps women gain skills for alternative livelihoods. At the same time, with schools reopening, our focus remained on ensuring that girls return to classrooms with enthusiasm and support through school admissions and tuition classes.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support and look forward to having you with us as we continue this journey of empowerment and change.

Through monthly rations, Umeed empowers women to cook nutritious meals, regain strength, and live with dignity. With every ₹520 you donate, a woman receives a month of nutritious food.

Screened. Informed. Supported.

A cancer screening camp was held at one of the centres in collaboration with Karkinos, providing oral, breast and cervical cancer screenings. Over 40 Umeed beneficiaries took part. The camp raised critical awareness and enabled early detection which is the key to improving health outcomes.
