AHAR raised the concern. The Centre responded.

Big Relief for the Hospitality & Wedding Industry!

In a significant development, the Central Government has clarified that no music licensing fee will be charged for weddings and related social gatherings, bringing major relief to hotels, restaurants, banquet halls, and event venues across India.

The proposed single-window music licensing system, tentatively named "Sangeet Dwaar," aims to streamline the licensing process and eliminate the confusion arising from multiple competing licensing demands and inconsistent tariff structures. AHAR was the first hospitality association to bring the issue of multiple agencies levying exorbitant fees on the industry to the forefront, and it has been a vocal advocate for consolidating fee collection under a unified, single-window framework.

AHAR welcomed the move, noting that hospitality establishments have long faced challenges related to royalty collections and overlapping permissions sought by private licensing entities.

✅ Weddings & social celebrations exempted from music licensing fees
✅ Simplified licensing framework under discussion
✅ Relief for banquet halls, hotels & event organizers
✅ Move towards transparent and rationalized tariff structures

A positive step towards easing business operations and strengthening support for the hospitality sector.

AHAR welcomed the clarification, highlighting that hospitality establishments have long faced challenges regarding royalty collections and overlapping permissions by private licensing entities.

Ahar would like to express its sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Honble Commerce & industry minister Shri Piyush Goyal Ji under whose leadership a joint meeting was called with AHAR delegates yesterday 14th May 2026 in Vanijya Bhavan, New Delhi and other stake holders to discuss simplifying music licensing and promoting Ease of Doing Business.

From DPIIT side Meeting was chaired by Hon'ble Minister Shri Piyush Goyal Ji , Secretary DPIIT Shri Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Chairman Samanway Committee Single window Shri Anup Jalota ji , Shri Sonu Nigam Distinguished Panel member, Director copy rights Madam Simran Kaur , & DPIIT team.

Ahar delegates were led by President *Shri Vijay K.Shetty and attended by Chairman copy Rights *Shri Vilas Jhaveri, Chairman Police Dr Satish Shetty & Advocate Shekhar Menon.
In continuation to our multiple representations with DPIIT team in New Delhi & through virtual mode.

We respectfully submitted the following concerns in front of the Hon'ble Minister.

1. Clarification on Licensing of Marriage & social functions -
Minister was categorical in his response stating that henceforth there will not be any charge on marriage functions and related to marriage only.
The DPIIT has officially waived music licensing fees for marriage, alleviating a major financial burden on the hospitality sector.
Members, this is a Great news for our industry and we are extremely grateful to the Hon'ble Minister listening to our prayer and giving much awaited relief to our hospitality industry.

2. Expectations of a single window licensing framework under Sangeet Dwaar
AHAR is the only body who have vociferously represented DPIIT for single window licensing framework & DPIIT also recognized the same.
Hon'ble Minister emphatically asked music companies for one week time for rationalization of tariff. Following a ministerial directive, music companies requested a one-month extension for tariff rationalization to replace arbitrary pricing with a standardized, government-approved system.

3. Clarification on collections by Private licensing entities (PPL and Novex).
Following a meeting with the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, all marriage functions are exempt from music license fees, and private entities like PPL and Novex are unauthorized to collect such royalties. The Ministry, with DPIIT oversight, affirmed that only government-registered bodies, such as RMPL and IPRS, may collect fees, with a one-month timeline set for tariff rationalization.
Shri Piyish Goyal Ji & DPIIT team acknowledged the constructive efforts of AHAR and agreed to convene another round of discussions with music companies in a months time for rationalization of the tariff.

We are grateful to the Hon'ble Minister to take out time for this important meeting and will keep you apprised about the latest happenings.

With Kind Regards,

Vijay K. Shetty
President
