Forward Seamen's Union of India

Forward Seamen's Union of India Protecting Rights of Seafarers & Well-being from 7 Decades. “Every seafarer is important to us, regardless of caste, creed, or race.

Forward Seamen’s Union of India, commonly known as FSUI, was established on 30th May, 1954. Prior to that, seamen were subjected to inhuman torture, victimization and hire and fire by the shipowners. There was no seamen’s employment office. Unemployed youths used to stand in the queue in front of the Marine House in Kolkata for jobs. But gangsters and musclemen everyday used to drive them away bra

king the queue to push their own people accepting bribes from them. It was a free for all situation. These tortures, created anger and resentment amongst seamen. There was constant desire amongst seamen to lodge protest unitedly. This desire and urge amongst them brought them together to initially form Merchant Navy Trainees’ Club. Soon the seamen realized that without a trade union it would not be possible to combat or counter shipowners’ virulent attack. That was the starting point with the formation of FSUI in 1954 as stated above.

"Manoj Yadav, general secretary of the Forward Seamen’s Union of India, said that seafarers were also struggling to get critical parts for ships.
The GPS of one vessel Yadav had spoken to was not working and they had been waiting 15 days for a replacement part, which should have taken just one or two days to reach them in normal times."

The 51st All India General Body Meeting of the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) was successfully held in Mumbai on 18th May 2026, bringing together seafarers and representatives from across India in a strong display of unity, solidarity, and commitment towards maritime workers’ welfare.

A new National Committee was elected for the upcoming term with:
• Mr. Bankim Bharati elected as President
• Mr. Manoj Yadav re-elected as General Secretary
• 75 committee members representing pan-India

A major highlight of this year’s AGM was the strengthening of women’s representation within the FSUI leadership team with:

• Ms. Aishwarya Gupta Pilankar
• Capt. Anuradha Jha
• Capt. Ayesha Vaz

joining the FSUI Core Committee as Executive Members.

This marks another important step towards greater inclusion, representation, and leadership opportunities for women in the maritime sector.

Heartiest congratulations to the newly elected team. Wishing the entire FSUI leadership strength and unity as they continue working for the rights, welfare, dignity, and safety of seafarers across India and beyond.

Honoured to participate in the panel discussion “Tides of Tension – Impact of Global Geopolitics and War on Women in Maritime – At Sea and Ashore” during the Women in Maritime Celebration & Awards 2026 organised by Marex Media on the occasion of the International Day for Women in Maritime.

The discussion highlighted an important reality — that geopolitical conflicts, regional instability and operational uncertainties deeply affect not only seafarers at sea, but also maritime families and especially women entering and working within the sector.

As representatives of the maritime community, it is important that we continue working toward:
• safer and more inclusive work environments,
• stronger welfare and support systems,
• better crisis preparedness,
• equal opportunities,
• and greater encouragement for women to confidently pursue maritime careers.

It was encouraging to engage with maritime professionals, educators, welfare experts and industry leaders on practical ways to build a stronger, more humane and future-ready maritime ecosystem.

The maritime industry grows stronger when inclusion, dignity, welfare and opportunity move together.

My sincere thanks to Marex Media and all fellow panelists for creating such a meaningful platform for dialogue and awareness.

FSUI General Secretary Manoj Yadav featured on ABC News Australia speaking about the humanitarian crisis faced by thousands of stranded seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz.

During the interview, Manoj Yadav highlighted “The survivors who came back to India still carried the fear on their faces.” “Many seafarers travelled nearly 1,800 kilometres by road through conflict zones just to return home.” “Thousands of seafarers are still inside the conflict zone.”

As the voice of stranded maritime workers continues to reach global media platforms, FSUI remains committed to demanding safe passage, repatriation, and stronger protection mechanisms for seafarers working in war-risk areas.
