Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others. Project Parivartan, a brainchild of the students of Enactus MPSTME was born out of a similar vision: To integrate the community and the environment. A large community of unemployed trash picker women reside in the slums in Andheri, Versova and Juhu. These women come from impoverished backgrounds with many of them being HIV patients, and vict
ims of domestic violence and r**e. They are occasionally involved in some health or vocational education camps organised by NGOs across the city, but have no steady source of income throughout the year. Mumbai generates waste to the tune of approximately 7,025 metric tonnes per day. The waste consists of - 5,025tonnes of mixed waste (bio-degradable and recyclable) and 2,000tonnes of debris and silt. The remaining life of our largest dumping ground, i.e., Deonar, is only five to six years and, so far, no alternative site has been found for waste disposal. The waste, which offers an incentive after selling like paper, metal, etc., is sold to informal dealers by rag pickers. Project Parivartan is an initiative to bring about a solution to both these societal issues. We produce environment friendly products that are produced by employing the concept of reusing whilst providing employment opportunities to the community of women living in the slums.
