Purnata

Purnata Purnata works holistically & collaboratively using research and innovation to End Human Trafficking by ensuring wholeness for all, from the inside out.

THE NEED
While HT is a heinous, detestable crime it is also a multi-billion dollar business, When you look at HT from the standpoint of a business, it’s all about demand and supply. In HT, the source areas are where the supply is and the destinations are where the demand is. The source/supply areas are mostly the backward, vulnerable pockets of our country. The destinations/demand areas are most o

ften our cities with booming economies. Migration plays a key role in all this. When I looked around in the AHT scene I found many gaps. The burden on my heart is to fill those gaps rather than reinvent the wheel. Most NGO’s are working at destination points, mostly doing rescue and rehabilitation. However, the reality is that when one woman/child is rescued and rehabilitated, another hundred have been trafficked. This makes the scenario dismal. It means that HT will continue to thrive as the profits are high and risks are low. There are some NGO’s working on prevention in source areas but they are few and far between and often not a coordinated effort. The purpose of this new initiative is to reduce supply and reduce demand. When you work on rescue or rehabilitation, it’s easier to quantify the work and the metrics of evaluation are easier. However, there are ways to make the outcomes more quantifiable and evaluate impact even in prevention. Purnata will increase the knowledge and awareness on human trafficking using the arts and technology with Govt and civil society; promote/foster effective rights-based (victim-centered), multi-disciplinary collaborative community responses against human trafficking; build and develop capacity of Govt and civil society to prevent and combat this modern day slavery. THE OBJECTIVES
This will be accomplished by focusing on the following in collaboration:

Prevention
Reducing both the vulnerability of potential victims particularly in source areas, the demand for exploitation in all its forms in destination areas and rescue children being trafficked in transit through outreach, surveillance, ensuring safe & regulated migration, formation of Active Communities against Trafficking (ACT) Groups (vigilant groups), facilitating good education, vocational training, counselling, healthcare and, in some instances, a place to live.. The outcomes broadly expected in relation to prevention (the major focus) are:
1. Reduced vulnerability of people in source areas (Awareness, facilitate education & livelihoods, social enterprise)
2. Increased risks to traffickers (legislation, convictions, harsher punishments)
3. Lower demand for the goods and services of modern-day slaves (prosecuting users, education)

Rescue & Rehabilite:
Protect and restore survivors of human trafficking to a life of dignity, purpose and economic independence – one life at a time – providing holistic, integrated livelihoods options while increasing the risk to traffickers. Reintegrate & Repatriate:
Reintegrating survivors of human trafficking back to safe communities, both within the borders of India and abroad. Research:
Bridge the current information gap on the situation of trafficking in persons, by providing accurate statistics and case studies, analysing and conducting research on the issue, in particular on root causes. THE APPROACH
The whole purpose of Purnata is not to deal with symptoms but dealing with root causes - reduce/end human trafficking by reducing supply and reducing demand. Though our vision is to see a total end to it, as long as there is greed and lust in the hearts of men and women, it will survive. However, we can strangle it, thwart it, reduce it and break its back. That can be done through collaboration and a holistic approach. The approach has to be collaborative. HT is too large for any one organisation or even the Govt on its own trying to tackle it. It calls for joining hands in collaboration. It means we have to rise above our petty differences and work together. We need to strengthen each other’s hands. We need to stop reinventing the wheel and use the expertise and strengths that we all have. We need to be more open and share our resources so that others could do their work well. AHT will require involvement all relevant stakeholders - the police, the panchayats, the relevant ministries under the Govt, civil society and the community themselves. The approach has to be more holistic. HT can’t be seen in isolation. It has many contributing factors and unless it is not dealt with in a way that addresses all of them, it won’t be possible to make a difference. For example poverty is often cited as one of the most significant factors leading to people getting trafficked. However, poverty though a necessary cause is not a sufficient cause. There are other factors within the spectrum of poverty that could have more directly caused it like, the desire to be rich, having more mouths than the family could afford to feed, being part of a particular community, region, etc. So while awareness is vital to reduce trafficking, it definitely is not sufficient. If children are not in school, they need to be put back in school. If the schools system is not functioning well then that needs to be strengthened. If there are young people who have are uneducated and unemployed they need to be provided with viable skills that will keep them in jobs.

Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing forms of organized crime in the world.

In India alone, an estimated 11 million people were living in modern slavery as of 2021 — the highest number globally.
This is not just a statistic.

These are lives silenced, freedom stolen, and dignity denied.
Awareness is the first step.
Action is the next.

On 12th March 2026, we conducted a Human Trafficking Training for around 40 police officers and constables from Govandi Police Station. The session covered the basics of human trafficking, investigative methods, the use of social media and open-source intelligence (OSINT), and how different laws apply in trafficking cases.

Despite the hot weather, the officers were very engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and actively participated throughout the session, making the training very impactful.

Resource Persons:
• Mr. Gorakh Jadhav conducted the session on investigation techniques and the new trends in human trafficking.
• Advocate Mrs. Seema Agate conducted the legal session, providing detailed information on BNS, POCSO, and ITPA, and explaining how these laws are applied in human trafficking cases.

During the session, we also provided snacks, sandwiches, and juice for the officers.

We were honored to present an appreciation certificate to Senior Police Inspector Sr. P.I. P. R. Sawant for permitting and supporting us in conducting this training.

We thank Govandi Police Station for their cooperation and commitment to strengthening efforts against human trafficking.

Deena and Pavitra have been placed at Tivah, our partner NGO, to begin their journey of inner healing. After going through deep trauma, they are now taking a courageous step towards recovery, restoration, and hope.

At Purnata, we believe that healing is a process, and every step forward matters. We stand with them as they rebuild their strength and rediscover their worth.
We wish Deena and Pavitra peace, healing, and a future filled with courage and new beginnings.

Trafficked 12 years ago, Maya Khatun and her young daughter endured unimaginable suffering.

For 7 long years, Maya was treated as an criminal under illegal migration laws instead of a victim of human trafficking. But with the support of Purnata and their legal partner, justice finally prevailed—proving she was a victim, not a criminal. While Maya fought her own battle in court, her daughter was rescued by Purnata in 2019 after facing severe abuse and exploitation at the hands of traffickers.

Today, Maya returns to Bangladesh to join her daughter with dignity and honor. Before leaving, she encouraged other women in the red-light area to believe that they too can step into freedom and rebuild their lives.

Support us in rescuing and restoring lives.

We celebrated the Eid festival at Navjeevan Government Shelter with a special art therapy and dance therapy session for the women.

The session began with Vidhi introducing the trainer, Natasha, who created a warm and interactive space where the women could introduce themselves and feel comfortable.

The first activity was a dance therapy session set to the song “Sapne Re,” centered around the theme of dreams. The women reflected on their aspirations and expressed them through movement, with each participant interpreting the theme in her own unique way.

This was followed by an art therapy session, where the participants were given a sketch of a sunflower and invited to paint it according to their creativity and perspective. Through colors and art, the women expressed their emotions and individuality.

After the activities, the celebration concluded with a delicious Bengali meal, bringing everyone together in the spirit of Eid.

The day ended with smiles, chocolates, and warm wishes of Eid Mubarak for everyone.

Give to Gain – International Women’s Day at Aashray Centre 🌸

On 9th March, we celebrated International Women’s Day at the Aashray Centre with the theme “Give to Gain.” The day was marked by a vibrant Food Mela, where women from the community set up 8 different food stalls, showcasing their culinary talents and entrepreneurial spirit. Purnata also set up two special stalls displaying purses stitched by beneficiaries Sheela and Rehana and another stall selling vessels.

Friends of the staff and members of the community attended the event, enjoying a variety of delicious dishes prepared by the women. Later, Rajesh Sir and Aaboo Sir joined the celebration, greeted the women warmly, and distributed roses to wish everyone a Happy Women’s Day. As a special gesture, Rajesh Sir also offered to cover the cost of the food so that staff members could enjoy tasting items from all the stalls.

A poll was conducted to select the best food stalls, and the winners were:
🥇 First Prize: Leela Tamang – Momos & Shel Roti
🥈 Second Prize: Shetal Sikdar – Fish in mustard gravy
🥉 Third Prize: Mamta Khan – Chicken Biryani

All other participants also received appreciation prizes for their efforts.

The event was filled with joy, encouragement, and community spirit, celebrating the talents, resilience, and strength of the women. It was truly a meaningful and successful celebration.

Celebrating Women, Strength, and Hope
This International Women’s Day, special programs were held at Mukhtir Aalo Centre and Aalor Disha Centre, bringing together women from the community to celebrate their strength, resilience, and dignity. Through encouraging messages, games, cake-cutting, and meaningful discussions on women’s rights, education, and safety, the day created a space of appreciation, empowerment, and unity.

The programs were also supported by representatives from the AHTU Ghojadanga unit, who shared important messages on women’s rights, dignity, safety, and the importance of education and self-confidence for women and girls.

Women from the community actively participated in organizing the event, preparing food, and supporting one another. The celebration also highlighted the importance of education, confidence, and opportunities for women and girls. A special art therapy session for girls is also being planned to help them express themselves through creativity and healing.

Together, we continue to stand for dignity, empowerment, and a brighter future for every woman.

At just 10 years old, Ms. Rumpa’s childhood was taken from her. Lured into a red-light area, she endured abuse, abandonment, and unimaginable hardship while also trying to protect her two younger sisters.

But her story did not end there.

When she turned 18, Ms. Rumpa through Purnata's support, finally found something she had never truly known before — safety, stability, and a sense of family. With counseling, education, and livelihood training, she slowly began rebuilding her life and rediscovering her confidence.

Along the way, she discovered her love for cooking and baking. After completing professional training, she now works with pride at a café that believes in giving second chances.

The quiet girl who once carried so much pain now carries confidence, joy, and dreams for her future.

This Women’s Day, we celebrate Ms. Rumpa — not for what she endured, but for the courage with which she chose to rise.
