Nine principles. One lifetime of practice.
Pandit Chitresh Das (1944–2015) laid out nine principles for the study of Kathak — but read them again and they aren’t only about Kathak, or only about dance.
Attitude and etiquette. Study and training. Riyaz with real exertion. Complete knowledge. Improvisation. To educate, promote and preserve. Sacrifice and selfless service. Sadhana. And the guru–shishya parampara that carries all of it forward.
Every art form has its own version of these. The tabla player counting in the dark. The singer returning to the same phrase for the hundredth morning. The actor learning that discipline is what makes freedom possible at all.
