What if the problem isn’t a lack of jobs, but the way we define a “good career”?
India’s education conversation has largely revolved around degrees, marks and placements. But beyond classrooms and campuses, there is another reality , a growing need for people with practical, technical and vocational skills.
We need plumbers, electricians, technicians, welders, mechanics and countless other skilled professionals every single day.
Yet somewhere along the way, we began treating these careers as a “second choice.”
Perhaps the question we need to ask is not whether a degree is valuable.
It is:
Are we preparing young people for the world of work, or simply preparing them to earn a prestigious label?
A degree can be a pathway.
A skill can be a pathway too.
The goal of education should ultimately be capability, dignity and independence.
This is a conversation worth having.
Would love to hear your insights.
Do you think India needs to rethink the way we look at vocational and skilled work?
