INTERNATIONAL LABOUR DAY | 1st MAY

“A labourer not only wants equality, but also liberty… the ideal system is one that ensures both.”

On this Labour Day, we remember Babasaheb not just as the architect of the Constitution, but as one of the greatest champions of labour rights in India. From reducing working hours to 8 hours, to ‘Mines Maternity Benefit Act’, ‘Women Labour Welfare Fund’, ‘Women and Child Labour Protection Act’, ‘Maternity Benefit for Women Labour’, and ‘Restoration of Ban on Employment of Women on Underground Work in Coal Mines’ -his contributions shaped the dignity of labour in this country.
Babasaheb was also played a vital role in the setting up of ‘Tripartite Labour Council’ in 1942 to safeguard social security measures for the workers.

Babasaheb also exposed how caste distorts labour—not just dividing work, but dividing workers—making the struggle for labour rights inseparable from the fight against caste oppression.

As we mark this day, let us reaffirm the vision of a society based on "Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity", where every worker lives with dignity and justice.

ASA TISS Mumbai salutes the struggles of workers and the legacy of Babasaheb.

On this auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, we commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Tathagata Buddha—who showed humanity a path based on reason, morality, and compassion. He stood for equality, challenged oppressive social hierarchies, and emphasised a life guided by wisdom, Ahimsa, and ethical conduct.

As B. R. Ambedkar reminded us, the principles of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity are deeply rooted in the Buddha’s Dhamma. In times marked by inequality, violence, and social division, Buddha’s teachings of Metta (compassion), Karuna (kindness), Mudita (joy), and Upekkha (equanimity) remain essential for building a just and humane society.

Let us move towards Babasaheb’s vision of a Prabuddha Bharat, grounded in mindfulness, dignity, and collective liberation.

We, the Ambedkarite Students’ Association (ASA), TISS Mumbai, wish you all a compassionate Buddha Purnima.

Today on the day of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jayanti, we are not merely remembering a social reformer, but a revolutionary philosopher who exposed the deepest lie of Indian civilization; that caste and patriarchy are “divine” when they are in fact, a carefully engineered system of slavery.
Mahatma Phule taught us that Brahmanism is not a religion but a political ideology of domination. Through Vedas, Puranas and Dharmashastras, the Brahmin cleverly invented the chaturvarna order, declared himself pure, and reduced the vast majority of Shudra and Atishudras to eternal servitude. He denied them knowledge, controlled their bodies, and justified their exploitation as “dharma”. Phule called this what it truly is: man-made slavery.
Phule did not stop at critique. He founded the Satyashodhak Samaj — a living laboratory of truth-seeking that rejected every scripture written by men to enslave women and Shudras. He opened schools for girls and Shudras when education was a Brahmin Saverna monopoly. He understood that patriarchy and caste are two sides of the same coin: one cannot be destroyed without the other.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar played a foundational role in shaping the intellectual basis of the Reserve Bank of India. His 1923 work, The Problem of the Rupee, critically analysed India’s colonial monetary system and proposed a stable, managed currency—ideas later taken up by the Hilton Young Commission (1926), which paved the way for RBI’s establishment in 1935.

Ambedkar strongly opposed exploitative gold/silver standards imposed under colonial rule and argued for monetary stability aligned with people’s needs. As part of the Viceroy’s Executive Council (1942–46), he further shaped financial and labour policies, influencing India’s broader economic framework.

While the British formally established RBI, Ambedkar’s economic vision laid its conceptual foundation—centering stability, inclusion, and accountability. His legacy continues to guide debates on India’s monetary policy and economic justice.

Today marks the 99th anniversary of the Mahad Satyagraha, which laid the foundation for organised Dalit assertion in modern India under the leadership of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. This day, 20 March, is observed as Social Empowerment Day in India.
Mahad Satyagraha was led by Babasaheb on 20th March 1927 with a procession of more than 2,500 people to assert the right of Dalits to access water from a public tank in Mahad, Maharashtra.

The violent reaction of caste Hindus following the Mahad Satyagraha reflected their deep opposition to an egalitarian social order, transforming this hostility into a justification for systematic violence and atrocities. Yet, despite this repression, the determination of the so-called Untouchables remained unbroken; instead, it intensified, culminating in the historic burning of the Manusmriti on 25 December 1927 as the second phase of the struggle.

The Mahad Satyagraha stands as a powerful reminder that a united and conscious struggle against Brahmanical domination can dismantle caste oppression and advance the path toward dignity and equality.

Remembering Manyavar Saheb Kanshiram on his birth anniversary, the founder of BAMCEF, Dalit Shosh*t Samaj Sangharsh Samiti (DS-4), and the Bahujan Samaj Party, and the author of the influential book The Chamcha Age. 💐

He transformed Bahujan awareness into a revolutionary political movement and Bahujan followers into leaders. A salute to Manyavar Kanshiram — the architect of Bahujan empowerment and the pioneer of mass political mobilization in India. Through his visionary leadership, he reshaped the language and direction of Indian politics.

Carrying forward the emancipatory ideas of Mahatama Jyotirao Phule and Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Manyavar Saheb Kanshiram devoted his life to organizing and awakening the marginalized communities across the country.

If Babasaheb gave the Bahujans the Constitution, Manyavar Saheb Kanshiram gave them political consciousness.

Ramabai Ambedkar’s fight was a quiet one, fought within the walls of hardship and exclusion. When Babasaheb devoted his life to education and social reform, Ramabai carried the burden of the household almost alone. During periods of extreme poverty, especially in Baroda and Bombay, she endured hunger and deprivation so that Babasaheb could continue his studies and public work. Even after losing her children to illness losses rooted in poverty and lack of medical care she stood firm, never allowing personal grief to derail the larger mission of social justice.

She remained unwavering in moments history often overlooks. When Babasaheb faced social boycott, caste humiliation, and constant resistance from orthodox society, Ramabai became his emotional anchor. She faced stigma as a Dalit woman married to a man challenging Brahmanical dominance, yet chose dignity over submission. Despite illness and neglect from society, she held her ground, sustaining the family with resilience and grace, proving that courage does not always announce itself it often survives silently.

As the Ambedkarite Students’ Association, we draw our strength from Ramabai Ambedkar’s life and struggles. Her endurance teaches us to stay committed even when recognition is absent, to continue our work despite scarcity, and to stand firm in the face of systemic injustice.
