This is Family Planning Association of India (FPA India)'s official national profile. FPA India, established in 1949, is one of Mumbai's oldest and most successful philanthropic organizations championing the fight for Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and Rights. As a civil society NGO with 41 branches extending through 18 states of India, we served over 30 million Indian citizens only within t

he last year. To provide this service we depend upon ordinary citizens whose voluntary commitment helps us advocate for access to SRH service provision and information related to contraception, safe abortions, HIV/AIDS and sexuality education to poor, marginalised and vulnerable communities in India, including the youth population. This is a goal we continue to strive towards achieving with 65years of experience under our belt. As the founding member of the International Planned Parenthood Fund (IPPF), FPA India collaborates with numerous domestic and international organizations along with the Indian government. Our extensive network helps bring the latest ideas, information, and technologies to India, keeping our projects robust and modern. The Panchkula Branch organized a meeting in Chandigarh to discuss the Punjab flood response and commemorate World Humanitarian Day. Dr. Suman Singh, Director of the Health Department, UT Chandigarh shared the stage with Dr. Kalpana Apte, DG FPA India, Ms. amita dhanu, Head of Programs FPA India, Mr. Vinod Kapoor, Past President Panchkula Branch and Mrs. Rashi Adlakha, Chairperson FPA India Panchkula Branch. The speakers noted that disruption of healthcare facilities during natural disasters has a particularly severe impact on women, pregnant women, newborns, adolescent girls, and other vulnerable populations.

Dr. Kalpana Apte highlighted that during humanitarian crises, services are not merely an additional facility but an integral part of essential healthcare services. The experiences gained from the flood response in Punjab, she added, would help further strengthen future disaster management strategies. Ms. Amita Dhanu conducted a special session on “Integration of Sexual and Reproductive Health Services into Disaster Management Plans.” She discussed in detail the need to incorporate family planning, maternal health, safe delivery, and other sexual and reproductive health services into disaster management plans in advance. Dr. Suman Singh, the chief guest talked about how ensuring continuity of healthcare services during disasters is of utmost importance. “The sexual and reproductive health needs of women, adolescent girls and other vulnerable groups must be integrated into mainstream disaster management efforts. FPA India’s efforts to reach flood-affected communities with essential services and support are truly commendable,” she remarked.

Key discussions focused on integrating the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) into disaster management plans. At the conclusion of the programme, Anita Batra, former Chairperson of FPA India, expressed her gratitude to all the guests, speakers, and participants and delivered the vote of thanks.

A proud moment for FPA India!
On the occasion of World Population Day, Dr. Kalpana Apte, Director General, FPA India, was felicitated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, at the state-level event held at Ambedkar Kalavedika, Vijayawada.
The event marked the launch of Andhra Pradesh’s proposed shift towards a population management approach, with discussions centred on demographic change, sustainable development, and the importance of informed public engagement.
FPA India remains committed to advancing rights-based, people-centred approaches to sexual and reproductive health, family planning, and population issues through collaboration with governments, communities, and partners.

🌍 World Population Day 2026

Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people starts with listening, supporting, and empowering them.

Every young person deserves access to trusted guidance, safe spaces, and compassionate care to navigate life’s challenges with confidence. FPA India successfully conducted a three-day Adolescent Counsellors’ Training Programme, strengthening the capacity of counsellors to better support adolescents through evidence-based, youth-friendly counselling.

The programme covered key areas including adolescent development, counselling skills, mental health, healthy lifestyles, substance use prevention, problem internet use, healthy relationships, trauma-informed care, and family engagement, enabling counsellors to respond effectively to the diverse needs of young people. Our Youth Volunteers enriched the sessions through valuable insights for adolescent engagement based on their personal experience.

With the dual objective of providing physiotherapy services to truckers and the broader trucking community, while also strengthening Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) among vulnerable populations, the Transport Aarogyam Kendra (TAK) initiative, supported by HDB Financial Services, helped reduce stigma, improve acceptability, and increase the uptake of sensitive health services.
Across the two Transport Aarogyam Kendras at Kalamboli and Gandhidham 1,39,341 physiotherapy services and 2,95,909 primary healthcare and related services were provided through the course of the project. Contraceptive services, HIV-AIDs related services and STI services were also provided to the clients.
The following video captures the positive impact these services had on truckers amidst their demanding work routines. We are grateful to HDB Financial Services for enabling this much-needed intervention and for being a supportive partner throughout the course of the project.

As the Menstrual Hygiene Day drew our attention to the need to prioritise menstrual health and address the taboo associated with periods, we at FPA India invited facilitators for an interactive session at our Head office. The facilitators introduced our staff to menstrual cups and reusable period underwears during the session that covered a range of themes including ways to increase the acceptance and pe*******on of the products and creating an enabling environment for its usage.

Apart from being an eco-friendly, hygienic and comfortable substitute to menstrual pads, the products can reduce the travel time and frequency to purchase pads. The products improved mobility and helped tackle the stigma around menstruation.

Spotlighting SRH
Addressing the underlying hormonal changes can help alleviate the disruptive symptoms of menopause, supporting women during their menopausal transition and after menopause.

Various State Governments such as Maharashtra and Kerala have committed to opening menopause clinics for addressing the medical and psychosocial needs of women undergoing menopause under the NHM. Menopause Care can also be accessed through Urban Health Centres, NHM-Supported Women’s Health Services, private health facilities and NGOs. We at FPA India are expanding access to Menopause Hormonal Therapy through our outreach clinics.

Listen to Dr Shobha N.Gudi, a renowned Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with over 32 years of experience in the management of high-risk pregnancies, childbirth care, adolescent health, menopausal care and gynaecological diseases talk about the holistic benefits of Menopause Hormonal Therapy beyond just symptomatic control. She emphasises on the role of MHT in the prevention for chronic diseases and the need to expand MHT as healthcare, for all women, including cancer survivors.
