Teach For India's mission is to build a movement of leaders to eliminate educational inequity in India. We endeavor to do so by adhering to our core values. The charkha or spinning wheel was a symbol for self-sufficiency and independence during our country's freedom movement. Just as the charkha spins fine fiber into strong cloth, our core values weave together our personal powers of transformation into a united and purposeful force to 'Be the Change' we wish to see in the world. In our series on our core values, here is how we try to live one of them, Empathy:

We take care of ourselves and those around us. We resolve differences with love and understanding. While we put in all efforts to change systems that are not effective, we do this with understanding and compassion and not with impatience, arrogance and disrespect.

Our firkis, turning briskly in the gathering wind, are yet anchored on a strong circle of empathy. We remain sensitive to each others' needs, even as we individually take flight.
