"Mountaineers are outdoors creatures who are more comfortable wandering in the hills, valleys and jungles. An inane sense of breaking free from the routine is found, in abundance, in this species. Immersing in great sights of flora and fauna, retracing historical footprints and enduring hostilities are amongst key drivers for them to set out. However, respect for nature and following the best of s
afety precautions is paramount for these free birds in all their quests. A little less than a decade ago, a need was felt amongst such hobbyists to exchange ideas, discuss the ever-evloving techniques, debate on some certain contentious issues and group-up to prevent the desceration of historical monuments, amongst other things. Hence, was germinated the idea of Girmitra Sammelan (Marathi for mountaineers' meet). There are thousands of mountaineers and naturalists in Maharashtra. And Girmitra is achieving the otherwise difficult task to gather all such people together. Over the years, the participation has grown by leaps, making it a strong institution and a must-visit event in every calendar. As in mountaineering, ambitions grow after every successful ascent. Being the decade celebration, a very exhaustive line-up of speakers and talks has been planned for this year's congregation and that too, at a very convenient and accommodative venue in Shanmukhananda Hall.
