On 2nd Feb 1971, Shanmugam became the first person to receive a kidney transplant in India. Two doctors, Dr Mohan Rao and Dr K V J***y were sent by Dr Chaco to Australia to study the process to be followed for a kidney transplant.

After two years they returned to India to conduct the first transplant, making a historic moment for India.

Dr Webb who was the Director advised the doctors to manage the resource constraints in order to make it a successful surgery. Any failure would make patients hesitant to choose a kidney transplant.

In order to ensure two Operation theatres are available, the transplant was scheduled for the night - one theater for the donor and the other one for the patient.

Today India has moved far ahead on kidney transplants. More information will be shared in days to come.
